Website Engadget is reporting that a “trusted source” has let slip to them that Nintendo’s extremely popular home console is going to see its MSRP slashed next month. The source claims that as of May 15 the Wii’s price will be lowered to $150. This move wouldn’t come as particularly surprising given that the platform’s sales have sagged since its heydays as the industry’s unstoppable retail juggernaut. It has also been selling for the same $200 price for approximately a year and a half now. Many would agree that that price is too high considering its features and that a 4GB Xbox costs the same.
On the other hand, cutting the Wii’s price just a few weeks prior to E3 seems like odd timing. Waiting to announce the move at the convention would seem logical. But maybe Nintendo has decided that they need to feel the benefits from such a maneuver sooner rather than later.
