It’s no secret that Microsoft is getting ready to roll out another major update to the Xbox 360 Dashboard. If you’ve been paying any attention to Xbox news whatsoever, then you’re also aware that the update is going to come packed with some new streaming services from providers like HBO, Comcast, and Verizon. If a rumor from the site GigaOM is to be believed, the update will arrive on November 25th and it will be powered by Silverlight (a Microsoft framework used for running apps).
That’s right gamers; their “sources’ claim that Microsoft is hoping to go live with the update on Black Friday. So while you’re camping out at Best Buy for whatever it is that people camp out for on years that new gaming consoles aren’t released – an older, game console that rhymes with smexbox, perhaps – Microsoft will be scrambling to deploy the update.
The version of Silverlight that the update will run on is said to be called “Lakeview.” It’s a “prettied up version” of the tech that allows for voice controls and Kinect gestures. In addition, the new version of the dash is said to be foregoing Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming tech in favor of, get this, Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming. The manufacturer’s goal is to enable third parties to develop their own apps for the 360.
GigaOM’s sources claim that MS is still tinkering around with Lakeview trying to get the precise functionality they’re looking for running properly. Over 40 partners are supposedly on board to release apps the day the tech rolls out, so the company is likely working round the clock the get the kinks worked out in time.
Stay tuned to MTB for more updates about the coming, um, update.
