Is WoW Going Downhill?

February 10, 2012

In the most recent subscriber count worldwide World of Warcraft has lost 100,000 users since this past November, but Blizzard isn’t worried.  Blizzard claims their reason for still keeping so many subscribers was  the 4.3 patch, as well as their special annual pass offer.  With the annual pass, players who buy a year’s worth of WoW will get a free copy of Diablo III.

I will say that the 4.3 patch did pull me back in.  With the addition of Transmogrification, Void Storage, and Raid Finder they have definitely opened up the game to more than just the new content.  I’m seeing more and more people doing old content in order to get gear that they think looks better.

Blizzard is expecting a revenue of $4.5 billion for 2012.  Along with the launch of Diablo III and the upcoming expansion for WoW Mists of Pandaria also this year.  As well as working on a new campaign for StarCraft II, Titan, and Blizzard DOTA.  So to answer the question is World of Warcraft going downhill?  I don’t think so, it’s just getting a little better with age.

Cathy enjoys playing video games to relax/escape from a long day. She really likes puzzle games as well as games that have a strong female lead. She is also kind of a poor gamer (as in money), so she tends to pick her games carefully. That way she can get the maximum fun for the cheapest cost.

WoW’s totally not going downhill.  Its just that the 10+ million subscriber numbers are hard to maintain.  I think they hit that mark because of the brilliance of having the cataclysm reshape the world in a way that brought alot of lapsed subscribers back to check it out (its why I went back to Azeroth), but the game is still 7 years old.  You can add stuff like transmogging and Raid Finder (some of which was long overdue), and that makes it a more entertaining game, but at the end of the day I think the numbers will still dip, at least until Pandaria comes out, as more people get burned out.

I, for one, will be curious to see how the numbers change when Diablo III comes out.

of course not, how many online games out there have at least half of wow’s subscriber number, it’s still a good game to play in & will continue to do well

there will be those elitist players who would hate it & make a lot of noise about how they think the game is going downhill because game changes haven’t been made according to what they want but that is just it
