Mashcast #81: Playstation 4 Cometh!

February 21, 2013

Dual Shock 4

I’m pretty sure I’ve used a similar title, but hey, it’s fitting. The PS4 was finally announced (as expected) and showed their cards. We discuss that… and pretty much only that on this episode.

A few points to make in my absence…

I think part of the hubbub over ACM was that alot of these sites gave it glowing previews based especially on the demo walkthrough that was redone.  So the sites need to be incensed over this and give the game extra harsh reviews, because it makes them look bad.  To an extent, they trusted Gearbox and TimeGate that the demo would be an accurate reflection of what would be portrayed, and since it wasn’t, they brought the hammer down.  It also helps make them look like an aggrieved party as much as the people who spent their money on the game and were disappointed.

I also think Jarret got lucky in his playthroughs.  I saw one video (of course I can’t find it now) of an alien walking upright (not hunched over like it should be) right past a group of people in a circle.  The AI was clearly off in that video, and it hurt the atmosphere of the game.

As far as rebranding the Xbox, I don’t think so.  The name makes perfect sense for us to get to this point.  X is a variable, where it can be replaced by gaming, or tv, or streaming music, etc.  And that’s where we’re at with the system, where its focus is on so much more.  Sony called their console the Playstation.  Its a station where you play games.  Also perfect.  I get the feeling true gamers will prefer the PS4, but we’ll see if the Xbox can make inroads as a general entertainment device.  Actually, aren’t they stealing from Sony’s playbook, since one of the reasons the PS2 was so dominant was the built-in DVD player, which is a different form of entertainment?

I think Shattered Dimensions was a good Spider Man game. I don’t know if you guys played it.
