Last Minute Presents Guide: Cathy’s Picks

Check out Cathy's choices for gift ideas!

There are only a few days left to get your gifts for the holidays.  Don’t worry if you haven’t figured out what to get the gamer on your list yet…  Mash Those Buttons is here to save your day with some games and accessories us reviewers would like ourselves.

(Disclaimers: The main focus of my guide covers consoles that I own at home and games I have had some experience with.  Prices listed are retail value and does not factor in used prices or prices online. )

Wii

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 $49.99

All I have to say is “Hey, it’s LEGOs of course its going to be fun!”  I have found all the LEGO games to be tons of fun. If you luck out and can’t find LEGO Harry Potter then don’t worry too much because any one of the LEGO games is great!

Wii Points-$19.99

Wii Points are always nice to have. For just $19.99, you get 2,000 points to spend on classic Nintendo games.  Games range anywhere from 500 to 1000 points per game.

Wii Motion Plus-$19.99

If you just have the regular Wii remote, you will want to invest in the Motion Plus Accessory.  These go over your remote and improve the motion sensitivity significantly.  If you don’t already have 4 remotes, I would suggest just getting the Wii Remote Plus instead for $39.99 and they come in a variety of colors.

Remote Charger Dock-$19.99

A charger for your Wii remotes is also a good investment.  The cheapest one I have seen is the Nyko Charge Station Charging Dock and Rechargeable Battery Pack Set.  This comes with 2 NiMH rechargeable batteries and charging dock.

PC

Starcraft 2-$59.99

Starcraft 2 has all the same great qualities Starcraft had and plus some.  It is also more addicting then the first!  There are tons of achievements that keep you playing; along with the new ranking system that places you against people of the same skill level for multiplayer matches.  If you liked the first one, you will love the new improved sequel and it’s well worth the cost.

Bioshock 2-$19.99

Bioshock 2 is another great sequel game.  In this one, you get to be a Big Daddy with plasmids!  Bioshock 2 has a completely new story, taking place 10 years after the 1st and that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.  This game was so good that I’m waiting for the next Bioshock to come out some time in 2012.

Any PopCap game-$19.95

PopCap Games has tons of great games.  All games can be downloaded right from their web site to your PC.  I would have to say my favorite ones are Peggle, Bejeweled, Chuzzle, and Plants vs. Zombies.  All these games are highly addicting and if your unsure if you will like them you can get free trials on most of the games.

Games from Steam – Various Prices

Steam offers tons of games for download directly to you computer and they are having huge sales right now.  Right now, they also have indie game packs which consist of 5 games for $5.  Some of games in the indie game packs have been reviewed by Mash Those Buttons already, such as Chime (part of the Indie Beat Pack) and VVVVV (part of the 2D Pack).  So if you liked our reviews on some of the games mentioned, then maybe one of these packs is a good way to go.  You can’t go wrong with 5 games for $5.

I hope that these ideas will helped you figured out what to get that gamer on your list and hopefully make that last minute shopping for them a little less stressful.

Happy Holidays and Have a Happy New Year!!

MASH Veteran

Cathy enjoys playing video games to relax/escape from a long day. She really likes puzzle games as well as games that have a strong female lead. She is also kind of a poor gamer (as in money), so she tends to pick her games carefully. That way she can get the maximum fun for the cheapest cost.
