Angry Birds Landing on Facebook

In an interview with Wired UK, Rovio Mobile announced that their uber popular mobile game is getting a Facebook version at some point this year. Rovio boasts that this take on bird slinging is going to feature “completely new aspects to it [Angry Birds] that just haven’t been experienced on any other platform”. The Finnish developer elected not to go into specifics about said new elements, but did add that “The pigs will have a more prominent role.” Considering that their current lot in life is to sit inside of structures of questionable build quality while patiently waiting to be squished to death, that could mean just about anything.

In addition to the Facebook iteration, the studio is also hard at work on already announced Wii, XBLA and 3DS versions of Angry Birds.  Not content with stopping there however, the developer has additional plans for a bevy of spin-off releases featuring characters from the original title.  Rovio states that their inspiration for what they are calling an “integrated entertainment franchise” comes from Disney.  While they are realistic in assuming that Angry Birds will not have the unparalleled staying power of Mickey Mouse, they want to see the IP grow in a similar fashion.

Will this strategy send Angry Birds to stratospheric levels of success in the vein of Mario?  Or will it end up running the franchise into the ground as Activision did with Guitar Hero?  Furthermore, will the pigs fire their architect and hire the third little piggy with the brick house that couldn’t be knocked down?  Leave us your thoughts below.
