Rizk [Browser Game]

Sometimes watching plants grow is not so simple.

Is your life too fast paced? Do you feel like you are always being hurried about day after day? Well slow things down with Rizk, a science-inspired tower defense game by Playerthree Games. This is just the thing for those who do not enjoy fast, race against the clock games.

Rizk is, for all intents and purposes, a tower defense game. Viewed in 2D from a side perspective, it’s a simple design that works for a flash game. Visually, the game is strikingly different in design. The graphics are based on 50s and 60s science fiction, and it definitely shows here. The little collectors that you dispatch to collect resources look like aliens from another age. The sound of the game is a bit annoying, and I found it better if I turned it off.  This was mostly because the elevator quality nature of it almost put me to sleep.

Rizk has the visual appeal and good ideas to make an interesting game. However, that does not make it fun. The basic idea of the game is to protect and grow this huge flowery plant. You, the creator, are protecting this plant from harmful triangle shaped spores. They have a weapon to attack you with, so you must have a really awesome weapon yourself, right? Nope, you have no weapons at all. You are a peaceful force, and therefore you can only summon shield-like creatures. The second part of the job is to collect resources, of which are the growing force for your plant. There is a different kind of collector for each kind of resource, and each resource may or may not be more likely to attract enemies. Did I mention you have limited coin to do this with? This is the risk factor in Rizk.

This game’s design is akin that of Farmville, so fans of that game may find some redeeming qualities here.  Case in point:  You spend a lot of time sitting and waiting around for things to happen. Unfortunately, the challenge of the game is too easy in the beginning to just wait around for your plant to grow. The challenge does pick up after a number of levels, but I found myself not really wanting to replay those early levels because of the slow paced nature of the game. For those who do not mind slow-paced games, Rizk is one of the better flash strategy games out there. If you are not sure though, there is no “risk” in trying Rizk, as it is free to play on the developer’s web site as well as on Kongregate (www.kongregate.com).
