U.S. Retailers Drop Wii Price to $170

More proof that an official price cut is coming soon?

Last week, it was rumored that Nintendo was preparing to drop the price of the Wii to $150 on May 15. Apparently, some retailers just couldn’t wait that long. Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, Target and Toys ‘R Us have put the console on sale for $170. Wal-mart, the mother of all retail corporations, is currently still listing the platform at the MSRP of $200.

This is not an official Nintendo-sanctioned price cut, but it certainly lends credence to the idea of one coming very shortly. It’s entirely possible that the retailers who slashed the price are trying to milk the console for all its worth in advance of an official cut and the impending Project Cafè announcement that will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the already sagging Wii sales. A price cut is always an effective way to temporarily make a console relevant again and boost its sales.

Prospective Wii buyers should definitely wait this one out to see how it develops. If you’ve waited this long to get one, what’s three and a half more weeks?
