As Nintendo continues to transition from the DS to the 3DS era, they’re trying their darnedest to unload all of those leftover DS Lites. So starting on Sunday, June 6th, The Big N will be slashing the Lite’s MSRP to $99.99. The Kyoto-based publisher also took the opportunity to point out that the DS (and its many iterations) has “become the best-selling video game system in history.” With nearly 50 million units sold in the US alone, maybe it’s possible that you already knew that the once-upon-a-time “third pillar” has done, you know, kind of well.
If a price drop for a silly ol’ system that only comes with two lousy Ds doesn’t do it for you, then perhaps this next bit will — select Mario games are getting red boxes. Despite the fact that they’ve been around for quite some time, and have moved serious units already, the six titles in question are not actually getting a price drop. New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Party DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! will instead simply be getting shiny new red packaging to cover up those worn-down old price tags.
This strategy is designed to get even more consumers to buy Mario games and contribute to Nintendo’s substantial coffers. Of course, if you’re reading this, you probably don’t need a color-coded guide to help you find quality DS titles.
