E3: Pikmin 3 Jumps Ship to Wii U

Something feels familiar about this year's E3...

What does E3 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 have in common? At some point during every one of those shows, legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto alluded to Pikmin 3 being in development, but didn’t deem the time proper to actually show it to us. This time around, there’s some actual news on the game, but it might not be the kind fans were hoping for.

The creator of the series has made it known that he feels the Wii U’s touch controller and HD output will provide for some interesting new possibilities for the game. As such, he has pushed back Pikmin 3 to Nintendo’s next console. Fans can take heart in knowing that Miyamoto did confirm the title is actually quite far along. Which after supposedly being in development for at least three years already, it damn well should be.

Of course, now they’re going to be adding in all kinds of U-specific concepts. There’s no telling how much time that will take to implement. Still, I have to assume that this one will arrive early-on in the Wii U’s life cycle. This will almost certainly be the last E3 we hear about the game but don’t see it. If rumors of a Q1 2012 console launch are true, it’s even possible that we’ll have already played the RTS game by then. Stay locked into MTB for updates on Pikmin 3 as they are made available.
