Nintendo’s Mario Kart 3DS currently supports local multiplayer for up to eight contestants, but they don’t want to stop there. Their goal is to incorporate that same number of racers into WiFi play as well. Joystiq cornered producer Hideki Konno at E3 and brought us some new info in regards to his online Kart plans. Questioned if the game would feature online play, he exuberantly responded “Of course!” Elaborating, he said “our goal right now is to have the same number of players for both local wireless and multiplayer over wi-fi.” Unfortunately, there is an issue that is currently holding things up.
They’re currently having headaches keeping the framerate locked into 60FPS when introducing online and offline players along with 2D and 3D effects. Hopefully they can figure that out, because eight player online Mario Kart on the 3DS would not only be all kinds of fun, but it would also open the door up for future 3DS games to do the same thing. While they get cracking on that, feel free to pour over our new images of the game.
