Wii U Has an AMD Graphics Card

GameCube, we hardly knew ye.

Very little was said about the Wii U console itself when Nintendo unveiled it at E3. For some onlookers, it wasn’t even initially clear as to whether or not it was a brand new console (it is). Thanks to Destructoid, we’ve got some new details on Nintendo’s next platform for you. The first of which, is that the system contains an AMD graphics card. It was referred to as a “custom AMD Radeon HD GPU” capable of producing “modern and rich graphics” with its processing core. They also admitted that it will provide “high-definition graphics support; rich multimedia acceleration and playback; and multiple display support”. Both the Wii and the Cube had chips designed by ATI, who was acquired by AMD back in ’06.

Speaking of ye ol’ GameCube, its games and accessories will not be supported by the Wii U. The Wii U will instead play “proprietary high-density optical discs”, which hold 25 GB of data each. That storage space is akin to a single-layer Blu-ray disc. We still do not know whether or not the console will play either Blu-rays or DVDs. Hopefully, Nintendo will include such features. Not doing so in the original Wii was an annoying holdover from the GCN days. That’s all we know for the time being, and there likely won’t be any new announcements on this front at least until September’s Tokyo Game Show.
