In a recent interview with director Neil Burger and Crave Online, Neil threw up a welcome surprise when he revealed plans to forego David O. Russell’s original screenplay and create an entirely new draft for the highly anticipated Uncharted movie. Based on the interview, it’s clear that Neil wishes to create the foundation of the script from the video game itself – noting its excellent use of cinematics and well-developed characters – and wishes to base the film on these factors.
However, because Neil will be creating a new draft, it is now unlikely that either Mark Wahlberg or Nathan Fillion will be taking the role of Nathan Drake, the protagonist and famed treasure hunter of the Uncharted video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog. Nathan Fillion had garnered internet-wide support to take on the role of the treasure hunter, which Neil had taken into account.
Neil also brought up an interesting comparison between Uncharted and the Indiana Jones films during the interview, “Indiana Jones is nostalgic. It takes place in the 1930s, and the later ones are a little bit later, and it kind of plays on that nostalgia.” Whereas, in the case of Uncharted, he believes the IP gives a more contemporary and intense feel, and is very “in the moment of now,” such as is the case with The Bourne Identity franchise.
Only time will reveal who Neil feels will best suit the roles of the characters in the Uncharted video game series. For now, fans will just have to try and relax while awaiting the completion of the new script.
