Image of Unreal Engine 3’s New Foliage Abilities Surfaces

Jump inside for all the chlorophyll you can handle.

Epic’s Dana Cowley released the above example of what the dev’s new Unreal Engine 3 foliage system is capable of. This should allow for incredible detail when future games recreate the “shooter on the grassy knoll.” What, too soon?

In all seriousness, many otherwise-gorgeous titles out there suffer from bland, fake-looking green textures passing themselves off as grass. This new bump to UE3 has the potential to go a long way in fixing that routine problem. But keep in mind that there’s absolutely nothing else going on in that image whatsoever. It remains to be seen if all of that grass detail can be rendered while chaos breaks loose in a massive adventure/RPG battle without the framerate taking a hit. Nonetheless, the image is quite promising.
