Xbox Music Coming This Fall

Zune, we hardly knew thee.

Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer gave a speech this morning at the Microsoft Partner Conference.  Although quite a few topics were covered, one in particular will appeal to gamers.  Ballmer revealed that the Xbox 360 will get a new channel called Xbox Music this Fall.  Details are scarce, but he did mention that it will contain in excess of 11 million songs and that you will be able to use Kinect voice commands to navigate through them.  No word yet as to whether or not it will recognize the “Xbox, get funky!” command prompt.  Presumably, this service will be replacing the Zune channel.

As one of the few consumers who owns and loves a Zune HD, this nail in the coffin of that project saddens me a bit.  Though I suspect that the far larger i-owning world probably won’t lose any sleep over the 360’s music service getting re-branded.
