By watching a few short videos, parents and gamers alike can now better understand the ratings behind video games (at least in Europe). The European rating system is a tad different from North America’s rating setup. To better explain how the EU’s PEGI ratings board handles game ratings, they have created some entertaining videos instead of the usual live action videos that have been put out there in the past. Their mustachioed hero – who is definitely not Mario – explains these ratings in a humorous way.
There used to be an embeded media player here, but it doesn't work anymore. We blame the Tumbeasts.
Their first video explains swearing when the hero loses all of his hearts and commences shouting expletives because of it. It then describes a scary game by showing the hero being scared in a dark room. Finally, violence is demonstrated by the repeated appearance of bigger and bigger guns/weapons in a stand off.
You probably assumed that this next video demonstrates the appearance of sexual situations in games and you would are correct. PEGI’s hero clears a level and then is confronted by the well endowed princess. Minus one hero’s shirt later and, well, you get the drift.
There used to be an embeded media player here, but it doesn't work anymore. We blame the Tumbeasts.
Finally, the last video explains online content. Their hero wanders into the gateway – actually just a door – to the online world and is trampled by cursing, gun-wielding, shirtless savages. The sad thing is, besides the trampling, this is pretty accurate to the online world. Do you guys think that the ESRB should try to something similar to these videos here in North America? Maybe they would help parents to better understand game content and ESRB ratings.
