Sega Acquires Three Rings Design

The former indie developer is now part of the Sega family.

After publishing  Spiral Knights through SEGA, Three Rings Design has seen the work of their small and dedicated team receive accolades from all over the industry. SEGA, in an effort to expand into the realm of online gaming, announced Thursday that SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe, Ltd. had taken the indie developer under its wing.

“Today brings to a close a ten year journey as an independent developer, and opens a new chapter for the studio as a part of the SEGA family,”  said Three Rings CEO, Daniel James, who founded the company in 2001 with a few talented friends. “As many of you know, SEGA and Three Rings partnered to launch Spiral Knights, building a deep trust and mutual respect over the past year.”

“We knew from the first time we saw Spiral Knights that the team at Three Rings was not simply talented but truly unique, and the close bond we have formed with them over the past year has only solidified that impression,” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business for SEGA of America. “We are proud to welcome them as the newest member of the SEGA family, and look forward to seeing what great things we can create together over the coming years.”

While no changes in service for Three Rings’ other games are planned, they are much anticipating a collaboration with the BBC on the Doctor Who: Worlds in Time.
