“So… where is Torchlight 2? Didn’t you guys say that you were planning to try to release this year?” Those are the questions that Runic’s Travis Baldree asked himself today so that you wouldn’t have to. What’s that? You have been asking those questions already and had already written off a 2011 release? Well, looks like you’re just a regular Mr. Smarty Pants.
In any case, it’s now official that there won’t be light at the end of the tunnel this year. After approximately 18 months of development, the team still needs a little more time. Baldree noted that the remaining amount of time the game should need to spend in the cooker is “relatively small.”
On the bright side, we’re apparently too busy with other games to mind too much according to Baldree. “Besides, you’re all playing Skyrim right now anyway, aren’t you? Or Battlefield 3? Or Uncharted 3? Or Saints Row 3? Or Arkham City? Or Skyward Sword? Or Minecraft? Or Modern Warfare 3? Or Dark Souls? Or Assassin’s Creed Revelations?”
Speaking of busy, the designer apparently has his nose held so tightly to the grindstone that he hasn’t realized that Skyward Sword isn’t even out yet. He says that Runic now has the resources they need to iron out the issues that they couldn’t get straighten out in time for the first game’s release; so we’ll likely be getting a superior product whenever Torchlight II does end up releasing next year.
