Epic Says Its New IP Is ‘Radically Different’ from Its Past Games

Epic's president expands on Cliff Bleszinki's tease of the publisher's next game.

Epic Games is readying itself to unveil a brand new IP at this weekend’s Spike TV VGAs. Designer Cliff Bleszinski already told the world that the title would be “entirely fresh.” Now Mike Capps, the publisher’s president, has reasserted the claim in an interview with Games Industry stating that the mystery title will be “something radically different for us.”

New IP, new game. We’re not really talking much about platform or anything like that, but I mentioned…that we were working on a lot of new projects, and it’s been really refreshing to the team to try some new things. We love Gears, it was a great trilogy, we’ve gotten a lot of great compliments and a lot of great fans, and we’re still supporting Gears 3 very strongly, but I’ve got guys that have been on it since 2001, and some of them need a break and to try something new.

Looks like those of you eagerly awaiting news of what platforms the game is being developed for will have to hold out a little longer. As you can probably gather from Capps’ statement, the game in question is being developed in-house at Epic’s Cary, North Carolina base of operations.

Continuing, Capps added that the whole team is deathly afraid of consumers either being averse to the new direction or seeing it and writing it off as standard fare for Epic. That doesn’t exactly strike us the words of someone who thinks he’s got a wildly unique product on his hands, but Capps alludes to his feelings being nothing more than pre-announcement jitters.

The publisher’s president says that everyone down in Cary is feeling “nervous,” and that they “haven’t been nervous like this for a while.” He concluded by jokingly saying that a poor public reception would lead to him getting “out of games for a while.”

Spike’s Video Game Awards will air Saturday, December 10th at 8pm EST.
