Nintendo Bringing the 3DS Circle Pad to North America February 7

Three cheers for the peripheral that should have been built into the system from the start.

Nintendo, realizing that nobody in their right mind enjoys controlling three-dimensional handheld games without dual analogue, has made clear their plans to bring the Circle Pad Pro 3DS attachment to North America on February 7th, 2012. It’s no coincidence that Resident: Evil Revelations is hitting store shelves on that same day. The biggest complaint from those that have gone hands-on with the promising action-horror game has been that controlling it is a real pain in the, uh, thumb. The peripheral is also releasing in other territories on the same day as Revelations.

The extra plastic is, as you can glean from a quick glance at the above image, about the least organic looking thing to be shoehorned onto a handheld since the GBA’s e-Reader. It practically screams out, “We kind of dropped the ball on this one.” Still, we’ll take it if it means not having to deal with the even clunkier control alternatives.

Gamers will be able to get their hands on a Circle Pad Pro – a GameStop exclusive – for $19.99. The unit also includes extra shoulder buttons and is confirmed to work with Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D in addition to Resident Evil: Revelations.

Its release only strengthens our release that the next version of the 3DS that Nintendo releases will pull the gaming equivalent of Pinocchio and become a real video game platform with two sticks built right in.
