Nintendo’s European arm issued a release today that slated JRPG The Last Story for a February 24, 2012 release date in that territory. The game is the latest RPG from the man who created Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and his team at Mistwalker Studios.
The title, which released in Japan in January of this year, is still not scheduled to make it to North American shores. When last they addressed the issue, Nintendo of America said they had “no plans” to release the JRPG here. That being said, they also made the same assertion about Xenoblade Chronicles, which got a North American release date earlier this week.
Wii owners in this part of the world are none to happy that The Last Story – which was awarded a 38/40 by the the respected Japanese publication, Famitsu – doesn’t appear to be headed our way. Earlier this year they started the movement known as Operation Rainfall in an attempt to convince the publisher to localize three major Japanese Wii games. Nintendo has stubbornly avoided doing so despite the fact that its release schedule is dryer than Gerudo Desert, outside of the Xenoblade oasis looming in April.
With one of the trio now coming our way perhaps there is hope yet that Mistwalker’s game will make its way over. Furthering that possibility is the fact that Nintendo of America trademarked the title over the summer, but that’s hardly a confirmation. For now, Wii gamers must do something they’ve surely grown accustomed to – wait.
