A Quick Q&A with Fatshark Surfaces New Details on Krater

One of the fine folks at Fatshark answers your burning Krater questions.

Fatshark Producer Robert Bäckström wants you to know all about Krater.

Fatshark, the fine development team that brought you Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 and Hamilton’s Great Adventure, has a new game on the way. The strategy-RPG Krater, a post-apocalyptic title with a surprisingly colorful world, is still a ways away from being in a limited-release alpha state. Yet that hasn’t stopped producer Robert Bäckström from giving his response to a few general questions in a press Q&A.

For those unfamiliar with Krater, the game is intended to harken back to the gaming days of classic strategy-RPG titles such as X-Com and Syndicate. Taking place in a world where teams of men and women scour the ruins of Sweden for salvageable tech and weaponry from years past, the title will be broken up into various episodes and potential future DLC. Sadly, as of the time of this writing, there is not much to show of Krater beyond two screenshots and some concept art, but the premise sounds interesting to be sure. Gamers will be able to create their own squad from a large roster of possible characters with permanent death requiring players to select new squadmates from time to time. Some highlight quotes of the Q&A with Robert Bäckström can be found below:

“We initially wanted the players to design their teams in the same way as you try to find the best and most optimized combinations of forces when you set up your army in tabletop games such as Warhammer Fantasy Battles.”

“We think that a typical team will consist of 10-20 characters – enough to lessen the impact of losses but not too many to lose personality of the individual characters.”

“The main release [of Krater] will contain 200+ quests. Out of these I would say that 25% [of that] is main story quests. It is very difficult to estimate the playthrough time because it can be defined in so many ways.”

“The initial release will contain customized 2 player co-op missions. We aim to expand this to 4 player co-op at a later stage. During 2012, we will also see a PvP update with both arena fighting and faction warfare.”

There isn’t much to be shown or said of Krater beyond the scarce information that Bäckström gives in his Q&A. Suffice it to say, it sounds like the sort of title that we at Mash Those Buttons will keep our eye on.
