Special Events SE: Blizzcon 2018: Out of Season April Fool's Spectacular

Jarret from Watchpoint Radio once again joins Nick, Rei, Eric and Harv from WoW! Talk! to look at the fallout from Blizzcon 2018. They begin by discussing the elephant in the room, the disappointing announcement of Diablo Immortal and the negative crowd reaction to it. They talk about whether the announcement was a good idea or not, and advise that Blizzard needed to at least tease Diablo 4 so that pc fans understood they were not being left behind for mobile gamers.

Next, Nick talks quickly about the new Hearthstone expansion, "Rastakhan's Rumble." He thinks it looks good, but laughs that Rastakhan is dying in WoW.

Speaking of which, the gang moves onto talking about the news for World of Warcraft. Mechagon and Nazjatar were announced as future destinations. Nick thinks everything looks promising. Harv seemed less impressed. They also talked about WoW Classic, sharing their experiences in the game. Nick found the boundary of exploration before getting too close to Thousand Needles. Eric died a bunch as a warrior while Rei went oom. Overall, they enjoyed the experience but agreed it was at best a diversion from Battle for Azeroth.

Jarret talks briefly about the Starcraft II announcement of Zeratul and looks at the update about the Deep Mind AI. Nick mentions that Orphea is the new HotS hero. Then Jarret takes over and goes deep on the problems of Overwatch and how Ashe does not help the game. He talks about the problems with her ultimate B.O.B. He also looks at the Overwatch decisions of late.

Nick brings up Warcraft III Remastered. He fawns over the cinematic while Eric and Harv look forward to playing the game for the first time. Everyone agrees this was one of the best announcements of the Con.

Nick asks everyone how they would have handled Blizzcon if they knew what Blizzard was releasing. He also asks about what Blizzcon 2020 looks like if there is still no Diablo 4. Blizzard is in an interesting place over the next few years.

Finally, Nick talks to Bob from Watchpoint Radio about his time at Blizzcon. He talks about meeting lots of community members and going to Con Before the Storm. He discusses his time playing Ashe and watching the Overwatch World Cup.

Special Events SE: Pre-Blizzcon 2018 Hype!

Is Blizzcon going to be awesome or is this the Blizzcon of our discontent? Jarret from Watchpoint Radio joins the WoW! Talk! gang to go over what we can expect from Blizzard at their annual convention.

First, they talk about the Mike Morhaime to J. Allen Brack transition and how that might affect the company. Jarret doesn't expect it will affect Overwatch, but Nick offers some examples of changes to WoW that may indicate the game is shifting in a different direction.

Next, Jarret dives into the state of Overwatch, talking about how the players tend not to understand the game, and how a certain player needs PVE Content or else the game population will decline. He also talks about how loot boxes have stalled as a revenue model.

Nick brings up Diablo and the lack of Diablo IV at Blizzcon. Harv mentions that maybe there will be a Diablo II remaster announced. They wonder if a mobile game would be acceptable to fans of the franchise, or if, despite Blizzard's announcements, it is still on the way.

The gang gets into expectations for WoW, talking about Patch 8.1 and patch 8.2 (or 8.1.5?) They ponder new allied races. They also talk about WoW Classic, and how Jarret doesn't expect WoW Classic to be popular, and everyone mostly agrees. They talk about the angst over the time-restricted demo. Jarret complains about smelting bullets back in vanilla WoW.

Nick rants briefly about Hearthstone, talking about how he thinks Ben Brode's departure is affecting the state of the game, and its going to be some time before it will fully recover, much to the community's chagrin.

Jarret talks briefly about Starcraft. Nick talks a little about Heroes. They have mild expectations for those games.

Then, the gang talks about the bands that were finally announced for Blizzcon: Lindsay Strling, Kristian Nairn, and Train. Nick points out that people are always disappointed in the band and although this set is more eclectic than usual, it really shouldn't matter. He then rants about people complaining about the virtual ticket items and bands like those are the only parts of the Blizzcon tickets that matter.

Finally, they talk about some of the panels they are looking forward to, including the cosplay competition and some of the voice acting panels. They also talk about some of the esports championships that will be happening.

Archives

Uprising returns as Archives, which includes a new story: Retribution. In this story, you will get a chance to watch the beginning of the end of Overwatch, as a Blackwatch op goes wrong. Additionally, there are new skins and highlight intros.

Changes to D.Va, Mei, and Reaper have made their way from the PTR to live. Additionally, changes to Blizzard World have arrived.

Role Queue

#101: Brigitte and the PTR Report

Bob is hosting without Jaa this week but he brings in IcySorrow and TotemlyDrunk to fill in and talk all things Brigitte now that she is live! But first, Bob mentions an iTunes review from Ionakeda. Thanks for the feedback!

Brigitte is live now! Totem says she's annoying to play against. IcySorrow had been playing her on the PTR and was not enjoying her yet. She and Bob debate her frontline vs. backline usage. Icy is worried about Ana's viability now that so many shields have entered the game.

Next, on the PTR report, a large number of changes have come to the PTR -- so many that Bob says this is the biggest PTR report he can remember. First they discuss the Avoid a Teammate feature, which Bob wants to use so he can be sure to play against people. Who knew he was so vindictive? There are also updates to the Report menu which seem intended to affect Sombra players. You can now also double-click to select a hero, which should help against players who use macros to speed-select their hero. Bob says he has a monster pc so he always gets the hero he wants. As for character changes, D.Va had her micro missile damage reduced and Mei can now freeze people through other people. Bob and Totem disagree about how the Mei change will affect OWL. Icy doesn't want this to lead to people overplaying Mei. There were major Reaper changes, and Icy is worried about them as well. Bob sounds excited for them, and they both agree that it raises Reaper's skill ceiling. Moira is getting some visual changes, and Zenyatta's Orb of Destruction has been nerfed. Bob says that all these changes are to affect either low tier play or high tier play.

In the Weekly Update, the NYXL won the Stage 2 Finals, defeating the Fusion, who previously upset the Spitfire.

Finally, IcySorrow talks about her new podcast Enter the Iris, and TotemlyDrunk discusses all the podcasts he can be found on.

Who should control the balance?

There is some chatter on the forums right now regarding pros controlling balance. Some agree, but many don't. Who should control the balance? Unlike most competitive games, Overwatch isn't dominated by its competitive players and has seen most of its success due to its high number of casual players. Does this mean the casuals should be important to balance changes?

The current competitive system.

It was a bit of a shock that no changes came with Season 9, even though Overwatch's ranked system definitely needs work. We talk about the various issue affecting competitive and what can be done to fix it.

#95: Capture the Dog

2018 Lunar New Year kicked off in Overwatch late last week. We go over what came with it, along with character balance, and UI updates.

Patch Notes

Besides Year of the Dog, the latest patch brings balance changes to Doomfist and Reaper that should slightly improve quality of life for both characters. Additionally, helpful UI changes were made.

Year of the Dog

This year's Lunar New Year event brings us six new legendaries, one new highlight intro, and two new emotes. Additionally, major tweaks have been added to CTF, as well as a competitive mode for the remainder of the event.

Sombra Buff Incoming

Sombra is being beefed up on the PTR. One nerf, which stops her from gaining ult charge from hacked health packs, but buffs in the the form of decreased weapon spread, faster hacking, and more meaningful hacks.

Year of the Dog Developer Update

Jeff decided to grace us with a developer update literally minutes before we recorded. It gave us some insight into this year's Lunar New Year event, such as balance changes for CTF, a longer event time, and a new map.

Mercy/Junkrat Nerf Effects

There has been a clear effect on Mercy and Junkrat from the latest nerfs. Both Bob and Kinder lament the changes to Junkrat, which Jaa seems to be perfectly fine with them. Through analysis, we are able to the negative impact to Mercy thanks to Omnic Meta.

Should Smurfing be an actionable Offense?

We pulled a forum post where the OP was complaining about smurfs on console. Console players have access to unlimited smurfs, which can cause lots of problems and can also limit the effect of the reporting system. Should something be done about it?

What hero does Overwatch Need?

Cosmetic Update

The long-awaited cosmetic update finally arrived and ended up surprising Jaa with extra skins he did not expect. Five new emotes, five new epic skins, 12 new legendary skins, and four new highlight intros are now available PERMANENTLY for all Overwatch players to get in loot boxes.

Blizzard World

Along with the cosmetic update, Blizzard World also arrived. Players are still getting used to all of the pathways, and Blizzard continues to add complexity to their maps.

xQc Suspended

Overwatch League kicks off this week, but that's not what this episode is about.

Placement Matches

Season 8 has started, and Jaa & Bob have completed placements on multiple characters. Something seems off those, as both have placed much lower than expected despite great stats during placement matches. They discuss what's going on.

Patch Notes

The latest OW patch delivers OWL skins, a new OWL menu in game, an update for Zenyatta, and LOTS of bug fixes for Doomfist. Additionally, console players will get some features they've been asking for.

PTR Report

Looks like Jaa isn't the only person that's been thinking Junkrat needs a nerf. His mine is receiving a bit of a nerf, while Mercy is getting hit hard with the nerf hammer. Valkyrie no longer has the resurrection benefits it had, as well as Guardian Angel speed being cut, and its length is reduced to 15 seconds.

Rien Buff?

Complaints have been bubbling up on the Overwatch forums stating that Rein needs a buff to compete with Orisa. Jaa and Bob talk it out.

#89: New Year, New Overwatch? [w/ NotRob of Omnic Lab]

Overwatch is kicking off the new year with a new competitive season with fresh changes, and we're kicking off the new year with special guest host Rob May of Omnic Lab.

Competitive Season 8

Starting with season 8, those in higher ranks will see some changes regarding matchmaking. Masters will only be placed in games with people within 500 SR, and for Grandmasters, that difference is 250 SR. This will lead to longer queue times for them but will result in better matches. Additionally, performance-based SR gains are disabled for ranks Diamond and above. This means players should focus more on teamwork than stats.

Community Update

Jeff Kaplan and team released a dev update recapping 2017, but also giving us an idea of what to expect in 2018. Hero 27 is deep in development, events will continue as we have expected it seems, and the Overwatch team is still looking to make changes to comp.

Playing Tanks

A recent interview suggests that Tanks carry a team rather than the DPS. Is that true? Jaa, Bob, and Rob discuss what the true role of a Tank is, and if they are really the carry.

#87: Sending the Wrong Message

Not much news coming directly from Blizzard, but we did get some changes on the PTR and news more news that effects competitive Overwatch.

PTR Report

If you check out the current build on the PTR you will notice that characters like Winston and Junkrat have more noticeable air control. This is a side effect of a fix made to all character movement. Bob likes it, but Jaa is skeptical. Additionally, Zenyatta mains will have more info about their Harmony and Discord targets, and Doomfist may be receiving a buff... Or a bug. We can't tell.

The One-trick Discussion

The discussion that never ends. An Overwatch dev steps into a forum post say that you can play whatever you want, as long as you are trying your best. Bob and Jaa think this is sending the wrong message for competitive players, as the overall team comp is more important than a players favorite character. Jaa & Bob also talk about ways that Blizzard can resolve this by adding new systems to Overwatch that give players more information about the matches.

Path to Pro

New info on how you can go from scrub to pro was released. On top of Open Division being available for all ranks, some Overwatch League teams are creating Academy teams to play in Contenders. This should help mold the next group of OWL pros.

#86: Returning to the Winter Wonderland

It's a new week in Overwatch and a lot is happening. Jaa and Bob are without Timeless this week, but we get the job done.

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland returns with seven new legendary skins, two new emotes, and one new highlight intro as well as a new arcade mode: Yetti Hunt. Both Bob and Jaa appear to not be too impressed.

Overwatch League Pre-Season

Last week we got our first taste of Overwatch League. Bob was pretty excited about the action. While Jaa did enjoy the matches and casting of those matches, he wasn't too thrilled about the commentary and analysis between matches.

Tokens

Jaa proposes an idea that could bring more skins to Overwatch in collaboration with companies like Marvel & DC. Blizzard could partner with those companies, and make tokens the currency for those skins. Bob gives his thoughts on the matter.

Player Warnings

In the latest patch, Blizzard included an update to the reporting system that will give players an in-game warning if they are reported. Also, if your report results in action, you will be notified in-game as well. Will this help with Toxicity?

#85: OWL Hype... Except for Jaa

Not much news for Overwatch. Well, not unless you count all of the stuff happening for Overwatch League and the pre-season exhibitions. Still, we managed to put a show together that is not all OWL based. Here we go.

Patch Notes

Players should see improved matchmaking in competitive due to a patch that decreases the range of skill raking between players on the same team.

OWL Info Drop

TimeLess goes over the list of matches, which have been shaken up due to the Philadelphia Fusion backing out of pre-season exhibitions.

Blizzard has introduced League Tokens which will be used to purchase league skins for your favorite team. A team skin will be available for each character. League tokens will not drop in loot boxes and can be purchased with real money.

Overwatch League merch will be available the same day the pre-season exhibitions start.

Console Players: Second Class Citizens?

Console players have been complaining for a while that they are being treated like second-class citizens in Overwatch. We discuss this issue which has been thrust back in the forefront thanks to a forum post.

Proper Use of the Reporting System

We dig into the reporting system, and how to properly use each item since there seems to be some confusion of what should be reported and what shouldn't.

Weekly Updates

There is currently a bug where Moria can target the payload.

Mercy has a bug on the PTR were rez can be canceled.

This week we are joined by Andres of Omnic Lab to talk the latest in Overwatch. Patch 1.17 brought Moria live, but it looks like she was a little too good to be true. Her and a few other characters have a few silent adjustments on the PTR. Also on the PTR, Blizzard World! The map isn't slated for release until next year, but it appears Blizzard is allowing some serious testing of the map over the next month. Another change that came with Patch 1.17 was the Mercy changes that were supposed to kill her... Didn't happen. Mercy mains seem to be adjusting nicely.

Additionally we discuss Oversumo again, and now the newest changes aren't making us very happy. We also dig into eAthelete behavior, and discuss whether or not Overwatch deserved eSports Game of the Year.

#82: There's No Torb in Team

As we wait for Moria to release, there isn't much news going on. Still, things are stirring in the community. A Top 500 Torbjorn main was banned for 24 hours after reports to Blizzard that he wasn't cooperating with the team. What does this mean for one-tricks? Spoiler Alert: you need to work with your team, and sometimes that means switching off to help with the comp. We also dig a bit into the latest update for Oversumo. Tweaks include a percentage based performance rating, and also only being rated against players in your current rank. Even with the new changes, players need to be mindful of how they interpret the data.

Additionally we discuss some pretty good proposed changes for comp from the forums. Adding LFG and locking comp to six man teams sounds pretty good to us... Mostly. We also get into the future of Overwatch comics, the relationship between Reaper and Soldier: 76, and more.

#81: New Character, New Map, Same Overwatch.

Bob is back from Blizzcon 2017 and had a blast. He tells us about his experience, then we dig into what we learned from Blizzcon. Biggest news is of Moria, the newest support character. Initially her game play video made her seem a bit OP, but after having a chance to play her, Jaa only has one main concern. Bob isn't that big of a fan of her yet, but we'll see how he feels when she's out.

We also learned about Blizzard World, the newest map coming to Overwatch in early 2018. Blizzard World puts together all of Blizzard in one map as a theme park. It's a payload map, which has Jaa a bit disappointed, because he was hoping for a new game mode this year. Oh well. We also got a ton of info on Overwatch League and saw the new spectator system in action. Both Bob and Jaa were impressed. All this and more on this episode of Watchpoint Radio!

Special Events #: Blizzcon 2017 Wrap-up

Its a Mash Those Buttons team-up! WoW! Talk!, The Tauren & the Goblin, and Watchpoint Radio all come together to talk about all the news from Blizzcon 2017! Jarret from WPR joins Nick, Rei, and Eric from WoW! Talk! to discuss Hanzo and Alexstraza coming to Heroes of the Storm! Nick thinks that the end of the cinematic is the beginning of Destiny 2 characters coming, but Jarret disagrees. Then, they discuss the new Kobolds and Catacombs expansion for Hearthstone, and Nick praises Ben Brode's presentation during the opening ceremony.

Then, Jarret talks about Overwatch's new hero Moira. He doesn't think she's a good addition to the game. They also discuss the Reinhardt cinematic which was good. The best part of Overwatch however was Blizzardworld, a theme park map which Jarret did not care for because it was a payload map, but otherwise has a ton of flavor and is awesome for any Blizzard fan to experience. Nick then interviews Bob from Watchpoint Radio who is on-site at Blizzcon to talk about playing Moira on the showfloor and the various people he met at Blizzcon.

Finally, the gang talks about World of Warcraft's newest expansion, Battle for Azeroth. Everyone gushes over the cinematic, which may well be the best cinematic Blizzard has ever put out. Nick brings up Classic Wow, and Nick and Jarret get into an argument about whether WoW or Overwatch is currently making Blizzard more money. Then the gang runs through the new features coming in Battle for Azeroth which is going to be exciting. FInally, Nick interviews Katie from The Tauren & the Goblin who was at Blizzcon to talk about the giant diorama onsite and the panels and craziness of Blizzcon.

#80: Mercy Died During This Recording

Saying Mercy died is a bit dramatic, but while we recorded some pretty serious Mercy changes his the PTR, and Mercy mains aren't going to be happy. After an impromptu hiatus, Jaa has returned. Unfortunately, that means there is a lot to be said and this episode is pretty massive. As Timeless discusses his final SR for season 6, the team talks about ELO hell, how it actually does exists at lower ranks, and why. We jump into the the most recent Overwatch League team reveals of the NY Excelsior, Seoul Dynasty, and Houston Outlaws. On top of not liking the name, Jaa has thoughts on the effects of having an all Korean roster on an American team. Especially an American team that represents one of the most diverse cities in the world. This leads to further discussion and discovery that Overwatch League teams are truly missing a community connection.

We hop into a post Jeff Kaplan made giving a small preview of what is on the horizon in terms of balance, competitive, and toxicity. One of those topics was about changes coming to Mercy, and what do you know -- they happened as we were talking about that exact issue. Mercy mains will not be pleased to find out that res will not leave them exposed, and can no longer be used on the fly to fix team mates mistakes, such as being out of position.

We also dig into the effectiveness of reoccuring holiday events, and talk what we would like to see instead. We also discuss Ana buff on the way, new Winston highlight intro, possible Hanzo buff, and more.

With Blizzcon on the horizon, news is pretty sparse, but Halloween Terror 2017 has started! Changes to Junkenstein's Revenge (including a new mode), and some new skins are what we get this year. #76: Overwatch League Can't Fail

Not much going on in Overwatch this week, but we did get a new comic featuring Zarya. This is the first comic that is a direct follow up to another piece of Overwatch lore. Jaa and Bob talk about what they thought, and what they'd like to see going forward regarding lore. Additionally, we talk about OWL and why it can't fail. Long story short, even if you're not a fan of Overwatch and the efforts with the Overwatch League, if you're a gamer, you need this to succeed. OWL is too high profile for it's failure not to impact esports for a long time.

We got a small taste of what's coming to this years Halloween Terror, and a console player comes to PC and makes top 500 using a controller only. This and more on this weeks Watchpoint Radio.

#75: There's a New DPS in Town

It seems that D.Va can't just sit in one role. Since Overwatch launched D.Va's job has changed three times it would seem. Bully to damage mitigation, and now, DPS. While her Defense Matrix took a bit hit, Blizzard has given D.Va the ability to output a ton of damage -- and the community is using it. This change is causing problem for shield users, but maybe they just need time to adjust to the new D.Va.

We also dig into some upcoming changes to the PTR that will punish many heroes by completely removing their ult charge if they are interrupted when activating their ultimate. Genji, Reinhardt, and Lucio seem to be the most affected, as their animations take a bit longer. Hanzo's dance before his ultimate isn't helping him either.

We also get into Blizzards recent anti-toxicity efforts, an upcoming Zarya comic, and some bugs and exploits that have been flying around.

Thorn & Thyst of Lagging Balls podcast join us this week to talk the latest in Overwatch, leading to probably our most not family friendly episode ever. After asking them a few questions we jump into the latest patch which brings Junkertown, D.Va, and Mercy changes. These changes are sure to shake up the meta, as well as leading to a lot of people trying to get Battle Mercy to be a thing again. Make not mistake, however, that the most important change in this patch is that Reinhardt can now change his camera view while his shield is up.

We also dive into the most recent developer update where Jeff Kaplan talks about their role in policing the community, but also pleas with the community to take a look inside itself. Jaa understands where he is coming from, but is not fully sure that the Overwatch team understands what the problem is here. After a few weekly update we hop into community questions which consists of performance tracking tools and how effective comms are overall.

#72: Hog Ain't Dead Yet

The recent road hasn't been to easy for Roadhog. After his last nerfs, it was uncertain as to how Hog could make himself useful again. Luckily for him, his latest buffs, while not making him great as a tank, do provide him with an edge that makes him a bit dangerous again. Season 6 has been full of Roadhogs so far, and they are no joke. Bob and Jaa get into their Season 6 opener, talking about their placements and what they are seeing so far. Additionally, Omnic Meta has released a report that summarizes the differences in the NA, EU, and KR metas.

#71: Lord Have Mercy

Not one, but two major character reworks are on the PTR right now. D.Va and Mercy have received kit changing updates that will certainly shake up the meta. No more mass rez for Mercy will lead to more decision making, while Blizzard cuts defense matrix in half, leaving us to wonder what D.Va's role is now. Additionally Reinhardt got a nice QoL change in being able to rotate his camera in a full 360 while his shield is up.

#70: Change is Good. Change is Bad.

With Gamescom here and season 6 on the horizon, change is coming. Blizzard announced a new map: Junkertown. Set in a post-apocalyptic Australia, Junkertown gives us a bit of insight on where Junkrat and Roadhog hail from. Based on a short cinematic released by Blizzard, the scenario is that we are looking to escort a payload of riches that secretly are explosives to Queen Junk. Fitting for the Junkrat/Roadhog pair.

D.Va is looking to get a lot of changes. It looks like Blizzard is trying to turn her back into a bully, giving her the ability to fire while boosting, and fitting her with mini-rockets. We are also going to see a lot of changes in season 6. Shorter season, changes to control maps, changes to placement matches, and more.

Additionally we will be seeing some changes to Doomfist's fist hitbox soon, as well as some changes to Mercy, and console reporting is finally going live. All this and more on this episode of Watchpoint Radio!

The latest Overwatch comic sheds some light on the hierarchy of Talon. Even though Jeff Kaplan says that Talon is run by a council of leaders, it doesn't seem that way. Doomfist appears to be the one wearing the pants around there, and anyone who wants to try on the pants gets dealt with. Speaking of pants, weapon skins. We might be getting some. Blizzard released a behind the scenes video that accidentally(?) revealed that weapon skins and even new weapon models may be coming in the future. The question is will they come in loot boxes, or will you need to trade CP?

We also dig into boosters hurting competitive, and what Blizzard may be able to do stop them from dropping rank. Jeff Kaplan dove into their balance philosophy, Michael Chu confirmed there are no plans for another ARG, and Scott Mercer talked changes coming to Roadhog on the PTR. After last week's nerf to Doomfist, it appears Blizzard is being very liberal with the buffs this week. Zarya, McCree, Reaper, and Reinhardt were all blessed this week with some pretty sweet buffs to make them more efficient. This comes at a great time, as a recent video suggests that Overwatch should use buffs more for balancing versus nerfing. While it might seem like fun, balancing in that way won't work out in the long term, and we discuss why. Also, since everyone else is talking about it, we discuss if Overwatch is dying. I'm pretty sure you won't be surprised by our answer.

Additionally we talk Overwatch league legal troubles, Doomfist's official release date, confirmed loot drop rates, reclassifying characters, and more. #64: Finally. DOOMFIST!

After much speculation, Doomfist is finally here! Unfortunately for us, Doomfist was released on the PTR the same day that we released our last episode, so we didn't get a chance to talk about him until now. His move set definitely sets him apart from the rest of the group, as he is primarily a melee character, and very reliant on his abilities. Rein is also a melee character, but Rein's main job isn't to hop into the middle of a fight and mix it up. Doomfist combines power with agility, and if allowed, can do upward of 600 damage in four seconds. Things are definitely going to get mixed up a bit.

Despite being happy with getting a new character, Jaa isn't too fond of Doomfist. Melee combat isn't something he's interested in for FPS. Both Rob and Anthony like the character and plan to play him. We also discuss Jeff Kaplan's stance on character balance and how it affects meta, as well as talk about the high levels of toxicity we are seeing in season 5. The group offers some solutions to deal with those people.

#61: Goodbye Hog, Hello Reaper?

Mikey may be gone, but a new host has come to fill in the large shoes he left behind. Anthony Fox was a guest on our show not long ago, and is not an official host on the show. With him comes some character balance we were expecting. Reaper and McCree got some pretty nice buffs that should show increased usage in the meta, while Roadhog is facing some tough times. No longer the solo pick when you need to carry a team, Roadhog players will need to be careful of who they hook, and be prepared to take multiple shots after a hook.

Additionally there are some nice interface changes, and Horizon Lunar Colony is now available to play. We dig into how D.Va is also a great counter to Pharah; possibly better than Soldier 76 or McCree. Diving into the weekly updates we talk about a new Sombra bug on Route 66, Jeff Kaplan clapping back at a troll, Blizzard's new partnership with Twitch, and a surprise real this week involving D.Va's voice actress.

The Overwatch Anniversary is officially over, and now it's time to move forward with Year 2 of Overwatch. Before that, however, we take a look back over the last year of Overwatch. Big changes, events, animated shorts, new characters, Overwatch League, and more. We also talk about what we'd like to see in the upcoming Year of Overwatch.

We get into some changes that we should be coming up soon. Tweaks are being made to Mystery Hero, and leavers will start to get perma-banned if their behavior continues. Additionally, Reinhardts hammer is finally getting fixed, just as we find out that Mercy has some bugs of her own. The #1 DPS in Overwatch has been banned for throwing, and Jaa has some important information about when you can leave a competitive match. This episode is a long one because it turns out that when you cover an entire year of an active game, it can take a while.

#58: To The Moon!

After a tease early this week, the PTR has delivered us a new map and character balance. Soon heroes will be able to return to the Horizon Lunar Colony -- a place we've only heard about in Winston's lore. Lots of people were excited for this map, but Jaa isn't so sure it's a great map for Overwatch. Major character balance is on the way, with Reaper changing the way he heals himself, McCree getting a much needed buff to Deadeye, and Roadhog getting nerfed AGAIN. Other than that, not much happening this week.

We did find out that Rein is having a little trouble with latency in his attacks, causing trouble that may cause him to die when he should live. We also discuss Jeff Kaplan saying he wishes he never put rewards into competitive mode. To Jaa's surprise, it turns out Mikey is only in competitive for the rewards. Finally we discuss some datamining that could give us a hint of what event comes next. All this and more on this episode of Watchpoint Radio!

#57: Happy Anniversary, Heroes!

It's been a full year since Overwatch has released, and while there has been some complaints, it's mostly been an incredible year. The success of Overwatch certainly surprised Blizzard, and we hope that they double down on Overwatch going forward.

The Overwatch Anniversary event is here, though it's not exactly what we thought it might be... Or at least what was leaked. No new hero, no new cinematic, no new game mode. However, we did get three new 3v3 maps and new rulesets for Elimination. Additionally, we got a bunch of legendary event skins. The problem being that ALL of the skins are legendary and there is no way you're going to get them all or even most of them. Each character also gets a new dance emote!

We discuss the latest in character balance, and what it means going forward. We also discuss the upcoming Overwatch Contenders league -- basically a minor league for Overwatch League. We then get into a discussion about a service Jaa didn't know existed: SR Boosting. Bob did a little digging and talks his experience talking to their customer service. No news from Blizzard regarding an anniversary event. Good thing we have XBox to leak info on the anniversary loot boxes! The Overwatch community has been pretty quiet in general, so it's a pretty good time to bring on our new host: BlazzinBob (Bob Schissler)! Bob plays a ton of Overwatch -- pretty much every night of the week. His main is Diamond level, so he'll definitely bring a different perspective that the show has been missing.

Since this week has been pretty news dry we tackle a few other topics. We talk about our hopes for Season 5 as Season 4 comes to a close. We discuss a few interesting points from the Michael Chu AMA. We get into discussion whether or not the community would benefit from SR decay across all platforms. Leaks and rumors abound as we approach the one year anniversary of Overwatch. Based on the leaks it looks like Blizzard is gearing up to have their biggest event to date -- possibly giving players a reason to come back to Overwatch. It's looking like we will be getting a new character, new maps, new game mode, and a new cinematic. Not bad for something not happening around Blizzcon. In addition to discussing that, we will also dig into the recent change to competitive assault map tie breaking. Looks like Blizzard didn't like the TRULY competitive system that was in place, and backed it down a bit.

We also hop into the PTR to see changes that will likely be going live. Quality of life changes to Hanzo, Genji, and Reaper, while Rein, Orisa, and Soldier get some nerfs. China finalized their law that forces game developers like Blizzard to release their drop rates for their games. We get a glimpse into what we possibly see in Overwatch, but Jaa is a bit skeptical. Having an incredible and well executed event drop on us last week, it's no surprise that there isn't much news this week. After a tease and a comic a week ago, we finally have Overwatch Uprising. Honestly, it's everything the Overwatch has been asking for since the beginning. PvE content? Check. #51: Uprising, Team Building, and Team Tilting

So much for staying quiet until the one year anniversary. Jaa is happy to be wrong about that, though. Blizzard surprised us with a teaser for their next playable event (we actually confirmed it after we had already recorded). King's Row Uprising will quench the thirst of those who want more info on the Omnic Crisis and the Overwatch world. However, we don't know what type of event it will be. Are we getting another horde mode? Maybe an objective based co-op map. We'll see in a week.

We also talk about the state of Widowmaker and if she actually needs changes. Short answer: no. We talk a bit about smurf accounts on console as well. Well... We made it! Welcome to the 50th episode of Watchpoint Radio! We'd like to give a big thank you to our community that has been listening week for week for the past 50 episodes, and we hope to be able to give you 50 more! Now that all the sappy stuff is out of the way, it's time to talk Supports and how they are getting shafted again. Just like season 2, Support players are finding that they are getting less SR for wins and losing more SR for losses after the most recent patch. What has changed?

We also discuss if there is any benefit to using unpopular characters to game the SR system. The theory is that characters that are played less have less data on them, and should provide an SR advantage to those who play them even fairly well. One Reddit user tested the theory, and he seems to be onto something. We also take a look at the console meta, most of which is predictable, but there are some surprises. We also get into a few weekly updates, and talk about what we think Overwatch needs in the future.

#49: Cease Your Resistance!

Orisa is now live, and as expected, it's taking the community some time to get used to her. Many are trying to use her as a replacement for Zarya, D.Va, and other tanks, when it's pretty clear she was built to be an option for Reinhardt. But now that she's off the PTR, we can focus on other important changes coming, such as Lucio being readjusted. Healing radius nerfed, healing amount buff, as well as some other interesting changes. Also, in an attempt to reduce draws on Assault maps, Overwatch will now track progress on objectives as a way to determine the winner on assault maps in competitive.

Also we talk about additional character balance, changes to Route 66, is Reinhardt actually a must pick, and more.

#48: Straight From the Kaplan's Mouth

Not much going on in Overwatch this week, but thanks to Jeff Kaplan and his Reddit AMA, we got some insight into whats going on in Overwatch. Looks like changes are on the way to Eichenwalde's first choke point, as well as new skins coming to McCree and Widowmaker. We also learn about the links between Titan's classes and the characters we now have in Overwatch. Jaa was also disheartened to hear that some character balance changes are not made based on stats, and more on player perception. He thinks that's dangerous.

Jeff Kaplan's GDC 2017 keynote was also released, giving us some insight on why the world of Overwatch looks the way it does. We also talk about how the latest Ana and Zenyatta changes on the PTR were reverted within 24 hours, Blizzard handling XP exploiters, more changes in store for Sombra, and more.

#47: When Do We Get to Shoot People?

A new hero was announced last week, but it wasn't exactly who we thought. Orisa, a modified OR15 unit with a personality module, is here to save Numbani -- as well as bolster the Tank roster in Overwatch. Just a few weeks ago Jaa and Mikey discussed the dangers of adding another tank like Reinhardt, and Blizzard has flat out decided another anchor tank to be like Reinhardt. Great. Jaa thinks this is a reaction due to the community complaining that Reinhardt is the only true tank, and that the Tank role should actually be called the Heavy role (there is a difference). Players should see Orisa soon after some additional tweaking, but in the mean time we can also expect to see some additional character balance for several characters.

Blizzard continues to try to balance Ana, cutting her abilities deep this time. Mikey believes they are going about it the wrong way. Winston gets a needed buff to his barrier, while Zenyatta can now use Orb of Discord through barriers. This can cause a huge headache for Reinhardt. Also, Geoff Goodman addresses feedback he's been getting about D.va -- essentially confirming she is supposed to be used as damage mitigation. Mikey disagrees. A lot. #46: The Bastion Meta is Upon Us

Patch 1.8.0 not only brings Competitive Season 4 to Overwatch, but also the load of character changes we have been seeing on the PTR to live. We knew Bastion would definitely have more survivability, but what we are seeing on live goes beyond that to damn near immortality. Putting Bastion in the right hands is pretty terrifying at this point, and it's something Blizzard needs to address. Blizzard also made some questionable decisions regarding defender respawn times in Competitive Mode, giving a huge advantage to the attacking team. Diamond players will also be sad to hear that unless they are playing at least seven games a week, they can expect to find themselves back in Platinum do to skill decay. These really aren't the changes we were expecting for season 4.

Additionally, Blizzard keeps stringing us along with new lore regarding Efi, and whatever she's building. 1v1 and 3v3 modes will be getting an update soon. Finally, we discuss how Reaper can be put back in the game, since he doesn't appear to be very productive right now. All this and more on this episode of Watchpoint Radio.

#45: No Doomfist For You!

The silence about Doomfist has been broken, and it was to hint to everyone that Doomfist isn't actually the next Ovewatch hero. Soon after that, more hints drop about two possible characters coming to Overwatch. Great timing. A voice actor may have accidentally leaked his involvement in a character called "Greek", while Blizzard introduces us to Efi Oladele -- a 11 year old robotics genius. Thanks to some leaks released back in January, we are able to speculate that you actually won't be playing Efi, but instead her creation. We take a look at those leaks and other hints from various pieces of Overwatch media to try to piece it together.

Additionally we get into the Winston changes that Jaa missed last week, as well as discuss community backlash over D.Va and how the Overwatch team feels she is in a good place right now. We also discuss Sombra's hacking limitations and if they should be expanded, and get into some community feedback on last weeks question about McCree, competitive season 4, and we discuss if overtime is fair or not.

#44: Roadhog 2.1, the Tragedy That is Bastion, and Fake News.

Jaa is doing this one solo again, but trying to make sure you get what you need to know about upcoming character changes. We finally got a chance to check out the Server Browser, and just how custom you can make your games. While it isn't perfect yet, we are hopeful that this will lead to great things in the future, and maybe encourage the Overwatch team to develop real modding tools. Jaa also talks about upcoming changes to Roadhog and Bastion. While he thinks there were better ways to make Roadhog fair again, the upcoming changes shouldn't hurt the big guy that much.

The changes to Bastion were put in specifically to make him more viable in other situations than sitting in a corner or behind a shield. Jaa doesn't think he is there yet, and offers some suggestions on what would make Bastion better. To be honest, Jaa doesn't really think Bastion can ever be a fun character to play. We also dive into recent Overwatch rumors revolving around Doomfist, and how easy it was to debunk them.

#43: New Bastion, Who Dis?

Those Bastion changes we were talking about last week? We finally get a chance to check them out on the PTR. Is Bastion a changed machine? Is he more of a Tank buster now? We'd love to tell you, but unfortunately the PTR went down before we could check him out. We do go over all of the official changes (at least on the PTR), and give our thoughts on them. He wasn't the only one that changes, however. Mercy got a nice little buff that makes her invincible while resurrecting. There is a nice little debate about how much that is going to affect the game.

The biggest news from the PTR is the addition of the server browser. Players can now create highly customized games and label them public to show up on the server list. Jarret things brings us one step closer to modding tools, while Mikey disagrees (of course). We also discuss Terry Crews doing a read as Doom fist, the recent ban hammer, keyboard & mouse on console, the current competitive bell curve, and more.

#42: Bastion Buff? Really?

Character balance never rests. After the latest round of nerfs and buffs, Blizzard has set their eyes on another target: Bastion. Looks like they don't like him being a one trick pony, so they want to make him viable in more situations. This feels like it may lead to more annoyance than anything. D.Va is also getting a small buff that may help her protect teammates better against point blank attacks. Some seem to think it will mostly impact Roadhog players, but how often are they doing close range hooks.

Speaking of Roadhog, the big guy seems to be doing a bit too good right now. We predict some possible nerfs heading his way to make him feel like less of a must pick. We also discuss the LFG experience in Overwatch, as Jaa's favorite LFG looks like it may be making a come back. After that we get into some user feedback as well.

#41: Welcome to the Year of the Rooster

Last week, we got a teaser of the next Overwatch event: Year of the Rooster. The event started last night, bringing lots of new skins, emotes, voice lines, and more. Perhaps too many voice lines... It also brought a new game mode: Capture the Rooster. CTR is actually Capture the Flag, but Overwatch style. Before the event, however, the Overwatch team pushed out a Developer Update video to temper expectations around the new mode -- where he explains the difficulties they had with bringing CTF to Overwatch, and how they abandoned trying to balance the mode and focused on the fun aspect. Regardless, both Jaa and Dre were none too impressed.

Along with the event came long awaited character changes. Roadhog players will rejoice, while D.Va players will probably be left wondering where they fit in. Sombra players should feel a bit more useful, but we doubt we see her in the meta still. We also try a new community discussion segment this week and more.

#40: The PTR Doesn't Care What You Think

If you thought the PTR was about testing character balance, well, you'd be wrong. Recently Jeff Kaplan gave some insight into what the PTR is actually used for. Also, additional character balance is on the way, as the PTR gets more tweaks for Roadhog, Ana, and Sombra. But what about D.Va, are they going to fix her? Short answer, no. We discuss why it's a bad idea to ignore cries from the PTR, as well as answer some of the questions the Blizzard team seems to be struggling with in regards to D.Va.

#39: Nerf This!? Challenge Accepted.

Right after we published the show last week the community got news that changes were coming to Roadhog. Most applauded the upcoming "nerf", but once the changes were clear, it's really not a nerf. It's not really a buff either -- it's removing Roadhogs cheese, while at the same time making him a more effective play maker. People tired of getting hooked by Roadhog around corners will be thrilled, while Roadhog mains will be happy that their pulls are now more consistent and come directly in front of them. A group that probably won't be happy, however, are D.Va mains.

D.Va last patch definitely made her overpowered, but this new balance is definitely leaving us wondering what D.Va's true role in Overwatch is. Her armor reduction definitely limits her survivability, but the addition on the damage nerf makes her an ineffective killer on many targets. Pharah and Junkrat feel like they can tear her apart, and even Roadhog no longer needs to fear her. It feels like a bit much, and we discuss the issue and talk about what we would like to see happen to D.Va.

Additionally, we talk some new voice lines for Valentine's day between Mercy and Genji, as well as discuss the problem how map rotation currently works.

#38: New Year, New Map, Same WPR.

As the Winter Wonderland holiday event ends, Blizzard decides to give the Overwatch community a gift by finally releasing Oasis -- their newest King of the Hill map. It shouldn't be too surprising, however, since Blizzard did say they were aiming for an early 2017 release. Can't get much earlier than this. While both Jaa and Mikey are happy to get the new map, Jaa isn't sure that the complexity of the map will truly be appreciated by the community. Oasis is probably Overwatch's most complex (and beautiful) map to date. We are hoping the community can adjust to it.

There is a lack of news, so on this episode we are focusing on the Overwatch solo experience. It's no secret that Overwatch is can be a VERY frustrating game to play alone. Lack of cooperation, trolls, and more add to the frustration. Blizzard can take steps to help with this, and that's what we discuss. We also talk about why there are no reporting options on console, and we also discuss the Mei glitch that's getting heavy use in 3v3 elimination.

#37: 2016, Your (Over)Watch Has Ended.

Here lies 2016, and our final show for the year. Not much has been going on, as we are sure the Overwatch team is enjoying a well deserved break after a very successful year. Jeff Kaplan took some time to do a Year in Review video that recaps the past year, as well as gives us some insight on the future of Overwatch. New customization to the comms wheel is on the way, but Jarret thinks they should be focusing on better ways to handle different types of communication -- like calling out enemy targets and making the communications wheel on console during matches. Also we learn that a new character is farther along than expected, and a new custom game browser is on the way -- which Jarret thinks can lead to greater things (spoiler alert: he means mods).

Additionally, we talk about the state of balance in the game, and what we'd like to see fixed in 2017. While Jarret and Mikey agree on somethings, they definitely have a difference in opinion on how to handle Symmetra. However, they do both agree that something needs to be done. We give predictions on 2017, and even come up with an idea for Telltale Overwatch game. Mikey isn't so sure it will work, but after playing Tales from the Borderlands, Jarret is quite certain it would be awesome. As the holiday season continues, Blizzard released a new comic that provides some insight into our Overwatch heroes (and villains). REFLECTIONS reveals that Tracer has a girlfriend, as well as gives some subtle hints that Widowmaker may not be as cold as we think she is. Also, is there something going on between Ana & Solider? And what’s up with Torb and all of those children? #getoffofher

We also discuss the pro meta displayed at MLG Vegas. We hope you like Tanks, because you’re probably going to be seeing a lot of them. Seeing how the community loves to mimic the pros, we may unfortunately be seeing a lot of 3-4 tank stacks. Solider: 76’s revived popularity may have run its course, as a beefed up D.Va appears to be shutting him down. Also, Zarya proves that you can’t nerf stupid as her kit proves powerful enough to still be used frequently in competitive play.

We also talk a bit about Sombra and how she may not be getting a fair shake. Is she too complex for the basic strategies we are seeing in Overwatch? We then get into why Blizzard should leave policing of the community to the community, and talk about how adding modding tools to the game would do nothing but help it. #35: Beastmode Symmetra in a Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland went live yesterday, bringing with it over 100 new cosmetic items. Now, we all know that means like 90 new play icons and sprays you probably won't use, but take joy in the new skins that you may get. We were actually a bit confused as to why Mei's new skin costs 3000 credits when the reality is that it's pretty much a pallet swap. Good news is some of the best skins are only 750 credits. We'd say we are winning on this one. Winter Wonderland also brought a new arcade mode featuring Mei: Snow Brawl. 6v6, one-hit kills, one snowball in the chamber. Stakes are high folks, and Jaa loves it.

Winter Wonderland also brings the new Symmetra changes we've been talking about live. Now we get to see exactly how Symmetra will play, and to be honest, she's a bit of a beefcake right now. The new changes definitely make her more viable in various situations, but at the same time, it appears that the Overwatch team didn't account for areas she already excelled in; like cooking enemies in no time. Sym feels a bit OP right now, but only time will tell if the Overwatch dev team agrees. We talk about all this and more on this episode of Watchpoint Radio.

#34: The Platinum Promised Land

Jaa is back, and just in time for placement matches (on Xbox at least). After a short offseason, Competitive mode is back with season 3. This season Blizzard is hoping to fix the mess they made with placements and matchmaking during season 2. Jaa talks about how he faired with his placement matches, as well as concerns and complaints coming from the community. It appears many didn’t get the memo about the changes to the competitive bell curve, and some are feeling a bit tilted because they are still being placed low due to their final S2 SR, even though they did good in placement matches. We also dive into the data that got released involving some Sombra voice lines and what that could mean for getting more info on our heroes back story through the voice lines. What could the mysterious Arena voice line from Athena could be? We, also discuss if the Overwatch holiday theme is legit and if that means that the holiday event is right around the corner.

#32: Symmetra is Here to Restore Order

The day has finally arrived. Symmetra has been updated on the PTR, and at that moment you could hear the cries of thousands of Genji mains at once. Symmetra’s new kit is no joke, and in an Overwatch first, she now has two ultimates! We discuss what’s different with Symmetra and what that means for the game and meta. Also, with competitive season 2 coming to a close this week and season 3 on the horizon, we discuss some changes that should be made to competitive mode to improve it for everyone. In the past we discussed the downsides of the current group SR gap, and Blizzard has also admitted to messing up the placement system at the beginning of this season. Even with those fixed, there are still quite a few issues that need to be addressed.

Additionally, we had a lot of user feedback last week. We talk about some disagreements the audience had with what we said about Sombra’s damage, changes to leveling, and why the latest nerfs and buffs were really about not forcing players to learn the game.

#31: Overwatch 1.5.0.2 #MakeTurretsGreatAgain

Just ahead of the next free to play weekend, Blizzard drops Patch 1.5.0.2 for Overwatch. The patch not only brings the long awaited Sombra, but single hero quick play, and a new arcade mode that has the potential to bring great new game modes to Overwatch. Surprisingly, however, the patch also pushed through all of the changes to character balance that was on the PTR. Jaa and Mikey aren’t so pleased with this. While certain characters (like Torbjorn) got some much needed attention, other characters feel like they were adjusted simply because many in the community cannot adapt to playing them (or against them) properly.

We will talk about why D.Va, Solider: 76, Lucio, and Zarya didn’t need to be touched. We will also discuss what this patch means for the community, and if it can help the console Overwatch community grow again. Also, now that Quick Play is single hero pick, isn’t it time to revert the changes to turrets (both Torbjorn and Symmetra) on console? Let’s #MakeTurretsGreatAgain.

#30: Blizzcon Blessings

Blizzcon just wrapped up, and it’s safe to say that all Blizzard fans walked away with something they enjoyed. Of course we are focusing on Overwatch here, and even though Sombra was no surprise, Blizzard still managed to surprise us with new maps, game modes, and to the glee of many, solo pick quick play. Besides announcements, the Overwatch team provides some insight into Sombra, her abilities, and where she came from. The Play by Sound panel provided great insight into why you should be wearing headphones, and even teaching Jaa and Bond a few things they didn’t realize.

Finally, the Q&A panel for Overwatch helps provide some insight on some of the cool stuff we missed out on, like Reaper picking up souls so Mercy couldn’t rez them. Jaa would really like that to come back, but Mikey might disagree. That and more on this week’s episode of Watchpoint Radio.

Special Events #: Blizzcon 2016 Wrap-up

Jarret from Watchpoint Radio and Nick, Rei, and Eric from WoW! Talk! got together to discuss all the Blizzard news and happenings from Blizzcon 2016. Jarret talks extensively about Overwatch and his thoughts on the announced Arcade. Sombra was announced, as was the Overwatch League, which appears to be the next iteration of Major League Gaming. Then, the gang talks about the World of Warcraft announcements. In his first appearance as lead game designer, Ion Hazzikostas did a great job revealing the future of the game and showing the direction he is leading it. Eric is happy that flying was confirmed for patch 7.2, and the gang discusses the different class mounts revealed.

Nick is glad that a plan was released showing a path from 7.1.5 through 7.3, although he is concerned that he will never get to playing his alts. They also discuss the Hearthstone announcement for Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, as well as Varian and Ragnaros being revealed for Heroes of the Storm with an awesome cinematic. Starcraft II is getting some AI and Jarret is concerned this will lead to bad things. Diablo is getting retro-content in the form of Diablo I remade in Diablo III. Finally, Nick discusses the most important announcement made this Blizzcon, regarding the return of one of Blizzard's founders, Allen Adham.

It’s no secret that we’re not huge fans of what we’ve seen in the pro-scene recently, but is the problem the players, or the game itself? Mikey and Bond couldn’t make this recording so Jaa roped in Mezza from Double Tap to come and discuss a few topics with him. While most know Mezza for his role on Double Tap and in the FGC, he’s also been playing Overwatch with more of a pro-competitive mindset. He brings a bit of a different perspective than you would normally hear on this show. We also get into more Sombra tease this week with some new ARG/Lore posts. We are tired of it already, Blizzard. At least we won’t have to wait much longer because Blizzcon 2016 is right around the corner.

#28: The Good, the Bad, and the PTR

Blizzard dropped a huge update on the PTR last week that STILL wasn’t Sombra. Big balance changes to many characters. Some welcome, some not, and some are just puzzling. You may think we need to take it easy, but remember, Blizzard has made questionable changes to characters before that felt unneeded (R.I.P. console Symmetra). We also got some confirmation from Blizzard on something WPR listeners already knew: Placement Matches were broken. Turns out that the system they used for season 2 filtered way too many players into Gold and Platinum, as well as placing players higher than they should have been.

The PTR is testing the new placement system Overwatch is hoping to use in Competitive Season 3, so we talk a bit about those changes to help those falling Diamond players… and gloat a little. We also got a bit more information on how MMR affects SR gain/loss, and while it did help us dig a bit deeper into how SR works, it also left behind some new questions. Additionally, are console players being treated like second-class citizens by Blizzard? At least one forum user thinks so, but at least he got a reply from Jeff. Lots of hurt feelings and a sea of salt if you visit the Overwatch forums right now. If you not too crushed by that news, join us as we discuss the latest data on the pro-competitive meta from the OW Open. We dig in a bit and talk about how this data may affect you in Competitive Mode. We also get into why you shouldn’t necessarily be clinging to the pro-meta in Competitive Mode.

Sure, if you’re playing with the same team of six every time you hop in to comp, it may work out. However, odds are you’re not. Please remember the pro-meta only works if EVERYONE is in on it. Trying to force players into it with stubborn picks isn’t the best way to handle the situation. Your best tool in competitive mode Overwatch is communication, and using that communication to be able to adapt not only to the people you’re playing against, but also the people you’re playing with. We also discuss why it’s a good idea to be proficient in many characters, versus putting all of your chips in one.

#26: Overwatch Halloween Party and the Fault in Competitive Matchmaking

Even though it was leaked a bit early (just like everything else these days), the Halloween event is live in Overwatch. Heroes will enjoy new skins, emotes, highlight intros, a new brawl, and more. The brawl may be more than meets the eye, however, as this may just be a prototype for something Blizzard is cooking up. In the most recent developer update, Jeff Kaplan tells us that they are working on new map and game mode prototypes; perhaps this is a preview of things to come. In that same developer update we got some information on the changes coming to Symmetra, which was a bit concerning, because it definitely sounds like Blizzard isn’t sure what to do with her. Just a thought, maybe do nothing.

We also discuss Jarret’s findings regarding competitive matchmaking. While many factors contribute to the current state of competitive mode, we are going to imagine for about 10 minutes that placement matches and SR gain/loss is working perfectly. Taking that into consideration, we still found a surprising flaw in the system, but we’re not sure if Blizzard is ready to do what it takes to fix it. #25: Blame Your Placement Matches... Maybe?

Things are still pretty quiet on the Overwatch front, but that doesn’t mean the show stops. Last week Jarret told everyone that he is gathering SR data on season 2 matches in a few different areas. He’s not ready to commit to anything yet, but based on early findings he things that your placement matches may be the cause of your high SR loss when losing matches. According to Jeff Kaplan, when the system believes you should win a match, but you lose, you’re punished a bit harder than when you lose an even match up. If this is still the case, and your placement matches placed you too low, perhaps being placed too low based on placement matches is throwing off the SR system. A bit too early to tell, but we discuss it.

We also talk a bit more about tweaking crosshairs and discuss some of the feedback the audience has given us on it. We also dig a bit more into Sombra speculation and what her abilities could possibly be. You’ll also hear about a few bugs, and some Halloween event speculation. #24: Saving Widowmaker and Begging for Unranked Competitive

Since her last nerf, life hasn’t been so great for Widowmaker. Even before tilting the team and toxic reactions, Widowmaker seems to be the weakest of the snipers. Changes are on the way, and you can test them on the PTR now, but will they be enough to make Widowmaker viable for anyone besides the highest tier players? In addition to Widowmaker, we are going to see some balance for Ana and Junkrat. I think everyone saw a change coming to Ana, but why the changes to Junkrat?

Another interesting changing coming from the PTR is a new “Dual-zone” mode for controllers. This should help console players and PC players that use controllers (why would you do that to yourself?) aim more precisely while also being able to turn around quickly. Too bad console doesn’t have a PTR, as we’re sure they’d get better data over there. Additionally, it appears the community is clamoring for a single pick quick play queue, or as we like to call it, unranked competitive mode. Adding a queue like this may seem like it may hurt matchmaking, but it may actually help improve quality of life for both players that don’t want to take Quick Play seriously, and those who like to use Quick Play to improve their game.

Finally, there are some changes coming to Symmetra soon, and we read a few e-mails from the audience that drum up quite the debate between Jarret and Mikey.

#23: Unraveling the SR Mystery and Stopping (N)Ana

Many are still trying to work out exactly how Overwatch’s Skill Rating system works. A new theory has caught our attention, and while Bond is gone for this episode, Jaa and Mikey talk about how close their experiences come to this theory (spoiler alert, not that close). It seems that many groups of people are experiencing the SR system differently. Last week we talked about someone who was getting 40 points per game on average, while many in the community are left with a cold feeling when one loss wipes away two or three wins for them.

While on the subject of season 2, we also talk about Jeff Kaplan’s response on leaver penalties. For the most part we agree, but Jaa seems to think we need a harsher penalty for leavers. Mikey talks a bit about how he has had to abandon Mercy recently for Ana, mainly because it’s hard to find people that will protect Mercy when she needs it. We also discuss Ana’s ult, something that can be a game changer for many. What do you do when you see a glowing red Reinhardt coming your way? There are many ways to deal with Ana’s Nano boost, but we discuss our favorite and most effective methods.

Season 2 is almost here, but not yet. As we continue to sit between seasons Blizzard is showing how serious they are about getting changes for Season 2 right. Additional character balance has been made regarding Hanzo and Solider: 76. The Overwatch team is also looking to address the placement problem healer mains are having. If you’re healing and you’re playing with a good team, while you may win, it looks like you’re getting the short end of the stick when it comes to Skill Rank and placement. The individual performance metrics seem to be skewed toward damage heroes, and healers are only getting a piece when their team needs a lot of healing. This leads to a discussion of how exactly should Overwatch determine placement in competitive mode: team or individual performance?

Outside of the PTR (and competitive), it’s looking like more and more people want a quick play mode with a hero limit. Blizzard is exploring ways to do this, but isn’t so fast to pull the trigger. Some people play quick play for practice, others take it more seriously. How can you please both? And how can you do it without segmenting the community too much? Discussion ensues. #19: Buffs, Nerfs, and Eichenwalde. Life on the PTR!

Season 1 is complete and Summer Games is done. The live Overwatch servers are looking a bit bland these days. If you don’t feel like waiting around for the next two weeks and are feeling a bit adventurous, the PTR may be able to scratch that Overwatch itch for new content and competitive play.

We had a chance to hop on the PTR and check out what we can look forward to in Competitive Mode Season 2. The tier system is just a dressed up version of last season’s ranking system, but the changes made to how the competitive maps are played are really shaking up the game. Sudden Death, and by extension coin flip), is gone. You would barely notice, however, since most games are settled before you would even reach that point. Adding Time Bank to Assault maps and tweaking the system overall appears to have made Competitive Mode much more competitive.

Lots of buffs and nerfs are heading to live servers soon. Some were needed like Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord nerf, while others left us confused (*cough Hanzo speed increase? *cough). Also, large hitboxes are back for projectiles. Why? Eichenwalde, just announced last week, is now playable on the PTR. To be honest, we’re not liking it too much. There has been talk of how defenders seem subpar recently… Not if you play Eichenwalde. We’re going to need to have a discussion about this. Gamescom is here, but unfortunately for us this podcast will release during day two and the show must go on. Next week we’ll be covering everything Overwatch related from Gamescom, but in the mean time we’ll talk about stuff we do know. Blizzard unveiled Eichenwalde: a new hybrid map where players will need to storm a castle in what appears to be Reinhardt’s home town. There is a battering ram. Do I need to say more?

We also got a lot of info from Jeff Kaplan on the upcoming changes to Competitive Mode Season 2. Sudden Death? Out of here! Skill rank? Still here, but changing. Besides the salty kind, tiers are also being reintroduced in to competitive mode. If you’ve played Starcraft 2 you might be familiar with the tier levels already. #17: Community Scorn, Loot Box Stats, and What is Defense?

It’s been a week and the Summer Games commotion has calmed down as players enjoy the content from their Summer Games loot boxes. LOL. Sike, nah. The community is just as mad as they were last week, calling for Blizzard to allow them to use credits to purchase Summer Games content. Players still feel cheated by the way seasonal content has been handled, and feel like Blizzard is just trying to drill into their pockets after they have already paid full price for Overwatch. Are they justified in their anger, though? We discuss that, and the realities of Blizzards games as a service model.

Speaking of Loot Boxes, we opened 50 of them to get some data on drop rates. If you’re not going to listen to the show, just know that even if you buy fifty boxes you’ll probably not going to get the skin you want. Jarret did, twice, but that was beating the odds. Sombra has (kind of) popped up again, so we talk the latest in Sombra Watch. There was an interesting post in the Overwatch forums regarding defenders. Do they need buffs, or are we just playing them wrong? Additionally, Overwatch celebrates 15 million players as well as gives us some info on what we should expect at the end of the competitive season. #16: Summer Games, Crying Games, and the "Fall" of Mercy.

In a surprise move, Overwatch is celebrating the Olympics with its first seasonal content: Summer Games. With it bringing in over 100 new Olympic themed cosmetic items, you would think the community would be happy, but it doesn’t seem that way. Many are accusing Blizzard of trying to take more money out of their pockets by making these items only available for a limited time while not allowing players to use current accrued currency to buy the items they want. RNG is the only way to get these items in loot boxes, which you can either earn with XP or buy. Many in the community think Blizzard is trying to push you to the latter of those two options.

In addition to that, the community has been kicking up dust recently about both Symmetra’s nerf on console and Mercy seemingly being useless. Both could be knee-jerk reactions to changes in the games meta, but both could be very real issues that need to be addressed. We talk about both. We also talk about Athena possibly becoming playable, recent patch notes, and this week’s Watchpointers on Zenyatta.

Long episode this week. Overwatch has only been out for two weeks, but it seems a lot his happening. Since the games release we’ve seen a ton of “Tier Lists”. We are here to remind you that Overwatch has no tiers. Rumors are flying around the about the first DLC and two new characters we will see. Not much is known about one, but Jarret is making predictions about the other. Nerfs for McCree and buffs for D.Va are also on the way, and we’re just hoping McCree gets the nerfs he needs and not just an overall damage nerf. Blizzard drops the ban hammer on cheaters, and it looks like they get rebanned even with new accounts. #8: Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

Overwatch Open Beta has come to a close and gave us a preview of what it's going to be like to play with a player base that's completely new to the game. As expected, we saw a lot of players having trouble adjusting to the characters, but what is more worry some is we saw a distinct lack of teamwork; making solo queuing very frustrating. This was even more obvious on the console side of the beta, where the lack of teamwork and confusion lead to Bastion being at godlike status for this open beta. It's been a busy two week for Overwatch. Jeff Kaplan sets the record straight for people complaining about premade groups being their primary reason for losing. Mash Those Buttons is pleased to present Watchpoint Radio: our official podcast dedicated to Overwatch and its community. Luckily for us, Beta came back just in time, and with a bunch of changes.

In this episode talk about the new progression system – how it works, what kind of rewards, and how deeply you can customize your character. Blizzard has revealed how they plan to monetize the game (after the initial $40-$60 of course), so we discuss how we think that will impact the game as well as try to predict the exchange rate for RL money to OW currency. We go through the LONG list of character balance updates, as well as a few general changes as well. Most character balances feel right, while some don’t sit too well with Jarret and Jason. Mash Those Buttons is diving into Overwatch with our new podcast: Watchpoint! Before we officially get started, though, we'd like to play a bit of catch up.
