Anomaly Warzone Earth [Review]

Fight back the alien menace and turn the tables in this role-reversed tower defense game.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth

In the distant future, mankind watch as meteors fall from the sky only to find the they are in fact alien spaceships.  In their destructive wake, they have set up “anomalies” across the globe.  These “anomalies” are domed areas through which the aliens have begun to use a staging platform for invasion.  Now the time to invasion are ticking down as mankind prepares for the worst.   Anomaly Warzone Earth puts the player in the role of a military squad commander enlisted to help take the planet back.  This title by developer 11Bit Games may be tower defense game, but instead of being the defender you and your squad are the invaders.  The alien forces have entrenched themselves into ruined urban landscapes and it is up to the player to break through their defensive lines.  It’s time to lead the earth’s last tactical force to bring the fight to the invaders and tell them to get off our rock! Are you up to the task?

Anomaly Warzone Earth is paced rather well and does a solid job of quickly orienting players into the games’ basic mechanics. As previously mentioned, you play a squad commander and it is your job to keep your units alive as you navigate a field of alien forces. You are wearing a special cyber suit that gives you a few abilities to help your units survive: Repair, Smoke Screen, Decoy, and Air Strike.  On top of these abilities, you also have to plot the path for your units so as to avoid the more dangerous towers in levels or pick up collectables.  For good performance, you may get air drops of bonus abilities to use in the missions which can be definitely helpful for survival.  If changes do happen in a level such as new obstacles impeding your path, you will be able to change the route of your units on the fly to avert them from danger.   These abilities in combination with sharp observation are the values that the early missions teach you.  In addition to basic mechanics, the game also orients you to tactics against enemies that you will encounter more often in later maps.  You are given opportunities later to upgrade your units to have better stats such as  more damage, improve survivability, and additional funding.

There used to be an embeded media player here, but it doesn't work anymore. We blame the Tumbeasts.

In the game’s story mode, the scripting and dialogue are well done while the soundtrack helps to keep the mood appropriate to the situation.  The battlefield designs mesh together well with everything and brings the full effect of Anomaly Warzone Earth‘s story together.  The campaign also provides four difficulty levels and there are leaderboards for the player’s performance with world rankings for those who want to flaunt their efficiency to everyone else.  There are also accolades handed out at the end of each map as well.  The game also has two bonus modes that are unlockable and provide a decent challenge for those who complete the campaign.

Anomaly Warzone Earth is a game that really caught my attention for a role-reversed tower defense game.  It can be purchased on Steam, the Mac App Store, and Gamer’s Gate stores for $9.99 for both PC and Mac.  There is a demo available for those who are unsure about the game and gives you a taste of what to expect from the full version.  I recommend purchasing Anomaly Warzone Earth if you are a strategy genre fan or love tower defense games because it’s brilliantly executed.  Check out more screenshots below!
