Two Downloadable Fighters Announced for Mortal Kombat

NetherRealm turns an old glitch into a full blown character

Despite the fact that Mortal Kombat isn’t launching until April 19th, developer NetherRealm Studios already has two new characters planned as downloadable content.  In an interview with CVG, NetherRealm Studios stressed their desire to bring MK fans completely new fighters rather than palette swaps for the disc-based characters from the retail release.  The first new fighters that will be available are Kenshi and Scarlet.

Fans will recognize Kenshi from his appearances in previous entries in the series.  As for Scarlet, NetherRealm Studios’ Hans Lo explained to CVG that:

Anyone who knows the history of Mortal Kombat will tell you that back in the days of the arcade…there was a glitch in one of the old arcade machines that caused the Jade/Katana/Milena female ninja to glitch and turn red.  People always thought it was a hidden unlockable character and it wasn’t, it was purely a programming glitch. They’ve always speculated and in fact it was the fans who named her Scarlet to begin with. She’s no longer a glitch – she’s an actual character, and she’ll be coming pretty soon post-launch.

NetherRealm Studios promises that it will keep the DLC flowing for “as long as people are playing [Mortal Kombat].”  Mortal Kombat II’s under-boss Kintaro is also supposedly on the way in a future update.  MTB will have a full review of NetherRealm’s fighting game once it releases in April.
