CCP Games is running a program in its MMO, EVE Online, designed to collect donations for those who suffered from the string of tornadoes that recently devastated parts of the southern, mid-western and eastern United States. Casualties from the storms are in excess of 330, with 249 occurring in Alabama alone. The program, called PLEX for Good, follows a similar CCP campaign that benefited victims of the earthquake crisis in Japan.
EVE players can help out by purchasing PLEX (Pilot License Extension items which can be utilized for monthly subscriptions or traded in-game) and contracting it to “CCP PLEX for Good“. The donations will be given to the Red Cross in real world monetary units. The charity event will be active until May 16.
CCP has stated that it will take strong measures against anyone who attempts to cheat the system. The publisher issued a stern warning that it will view “any scamming attempts surrounding this effort to be morally reprehensible and they will be met with swiftest action.”
We like to think that it won’t come to that. After all, EVE Online players have donated more than $150,000 to charities since 2004. MTB’s hearts go out to those affected by the tornadoes.
