Sega Makes Shinobi 3DS Official

First footage showcases the return of the baddest scarf-wearing ninja in gaming.

There used to be an embeded media player here, but it doesn't work anymore. We blame the Tumbeasts.

After taking an eight year hiatus to trot the globe in search of obscenely long red scarves, Sega’s favorite ninja is returning this September in a game titled simply: Shinobi.  The most recent Nintendo Power had already outed the ninja’s return, but now we have even official-ier confirmation from Sega themselves. In addition to a press release, Sega also released the above trailer; roughly half of which is spent recalling the franchise’s past.

Developed by Griptonite Games, Shinobi will consist mostly of side-scrolling action, with some 3D portions thrown in to change things up now and again.  In order to ascend to legendary ninja status, players will need to master “a brand new combo system switching between melee, ranged and acrobatic attacks”.  As Jiro Mushari, leader of the Oboro clan, you’ll also have “ninja magic” at your disposal.   (How exactly does that differ from regular magic?)

The promising footage leads us to believe that the 3DS could be receiving another sorely-needed quality hardcore game in Shinobi.   Of course, we’ll have to play it for ourselves to determine that for sure; but, Sega promises “that Shinobi veterans and newcomers will equally enjoy” the games’ new features.
