Well, didn’t see this one coming (no sarcasm). It has been confirmed that GameStop is instructing employees to remove all OnLive coupons included with the retail PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. GameStop public relations representative Beth Sharum confirmed they were removing the coupons, stating the following:
Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons.
At this time neither OnLive or Square Enix are ready to comment on the situation. My biggest problem with this is that while they are opening these boxes and removing the codes, they are still selling the games as new. If GameStop wanted too, they can reject returns even if a player hasn’t really played the game. This is something new that we really haven’t seen before and it makes me wonder if this is just the start of GameStop removing promotions that conflict with their other services. Will we see them take action against games that promote Steam or Origin next? Only thing I know is that there is a clash on the way and I’m curious to see how this will all turn out.
