Although we are coming ever closer to the release date on February 22 of the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s highly anticipated handheld, things keep sounding less and less exciting regarding it. We’ve already heard about Vita’s ho-hum sales in Japan, and now it seems that the data plans for the system have already increased in price.
Sony was offering two plans for the Vita through AT&T, which had been announced a while ago. Well, there are still two plans, but now one of them costs a little extra. On one hand, the data cap has been extended to 3GB. On the other hand, the price is up $5 from the $25 the original 2GB plan was. The real question is whether or not AT&T is trying to tailor their data package to the consumers, or if they’re just trying to increase profits.
These data package price increases also extend to tablets and smartphones, which makes it seem to be more about profit than anything else. Extending the cap for data tempts those of which are already on data plans to buy the new data plan to save money, which is what companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint seem to be aiming to do.
It’s best in the case of Vita to take a “wait and see” approach for data. How much data will you really use on the Vita? That’s what consumers really should be asking themselves before committing to a data package and all the prices that are tied to it. What do you think about the price increase for data or the poor sales of the Vita in Japan?
