It seems the new Medal Of Honor is causing quite a stir for people with ties to family and friends fighting in Afghanistan reports the New York Daily News. The report states that many families that have lost a loved one have become enraged about the game that pits soldiers against insurgents.
Here are some quotes from the individuals about their feelings about the game courtesy of the NY Daily News Site:
“My son didn’t get to start over when he was killed,” Karen Meredith, whose son died in Afghanistan, told Fox News. “His life is over, and I have to deal with this every day…it’s just not a game.”
Dan Whitehead, a player who tested an early prototype of the game, said the experience made him uncomfortable, AOL News reported.
“I felt more than a little weird, especially since a friend lost his brother in Afghanistan only a few weeks ago,” he wrote at eurogamer.net. “This is a real war that is happening right now, real blood is being shed, and simulating that for fragfest fun while being rewarded for kill streaks…Well, there’s just something a bit icky about that.”
But the game’s creators say they aren’t trying to make a political statement.
“Most of us having been doing this since we were 7 — if someone’s the cop, someone’s gotta be the robber, someone’s gotta be the pirate and someone’s gotta be the alien,” Amanda Taggart, senior PR manager for EA, told AOL. “In ‘Medal of Honor’ multiplayer, someone’s gotta be the Taliban.”
The game seems to tweak many individuals the wrong way considering that your killing your opponent and your also being rewarded for certain amount of kill streaks.
Personally, my best friend, someone I consider a brother more than anything, is fighting overseas in Afghanistan as I type this out. I can tell you from both of our perspectives that he would support this game to the fullest extent. We are both avid gamers and have been playing since we were very young. I would support this game because in the end…it is just that…a game. Nothing more, nothing less. These people must not know of other games that will always pit hero against villain. Games such as the infamous online shooter for about the last decade “Counter Strike.” The game pits Counter-Terrorist against Terrorist and has been, if not still is, one of the most played online shooters.
The fact that this game’s characters are soldiers and the enemies are insurgents. The game play is still very much the same, with bumped up graphics. If you wish not to support this game, then do not buy it. Just do not be surprised when it is one of the hottest selling games this year! It was not our choice for someone to enlist in the military to fight overseas, the same way it will not be your choice to purchase this game. If you feel something is wrong, do not support it. This is why America is great, I have the freedom to buy the game I want to play as much as I want to enjoy it for all its worth.
I previewed this game in this post, and I am eagerly anticipating the single-player and multi-player because of the games ability to immerse you in the great game play they provide time-and-time again. Guess who also viewed this post and is also looking forward to the game?
You guessed it.
My best friend whose fighting in Afghanistan.
