The future is now! …Or at least when the Vita is released. Sony has confirmed that Vita retail games will be available for download on PSN on launch day. Many of you know I am a devout PC gamer, and I revel in the fact that I can purchase, download, and play the bulk of my games in my underwear without brushing my teeth before most retailers even open for the day. Now you too can know this feeling… this freedom! On top of that, based on official Japanese prices, it appears that it will be cheaper to download games than buy them at a retailer. What’s that sound? Oh, that’s just the sound of Sony slapping retail’s momma.
If this goes well, I can imagine that Sony — and perhaps Microsoft or Nintendo — may try this model for their consoles. Probably not in the current generation, but retailers may want to watch out when the next generation comes stocked with larger hard drives to hold all that downloadable goodness. This would be excellent for gamers not only because of the cheaper prices, but because then we would all be brothers. Brothers bound by a creed of buying games pantless. What do you think? Would you still buy your games retail because you like having that physical copy? Or would you join me in my pantsless rebellion?
