Blizzard DotA Trailer Emerges

Other title choices were "Generic: The Naming" and "Stop It, Valve."

There used to be an embeded media player here, but it doesn't work anymore. We blame the Tumbeasts.

DotA (Defense of the Ancients) is such a weird beast. For those unfamiliar with the game’s history, it began as a community mod for Warcraft III which gained a lot of momentum, especially in Europe. Its fans went on to found a unique gaming genre for its style referred to as MOBA, or “multiplayer online battle arena”. MOBAs recently saw a surge in popularity with games such as Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, and Bloodline Champions. Then something weird happened. It turned out Valve was making a DotA sequel while Blizzard was making its own DotA game.

Valve unveiled the trailer for DotA 2 back at GamesCom, and even ran a huge tournament full of professional DotA teams with a large prize at stake. Now, during this year’s BlizzCon, Blizzard has released a trailer for Blizzard DotA. The trailer, seen above, shows off small snippets of the game. For all intents and purposes, it looks like your basic MOBA game with an infusion of popular Blizzard library heroes.

Now here’s the ultimate kicker: both Valve and Blizzard have announced that each of their games will be out very soon. Some journalists in the industry have gone so far as to speculate a release for DotA 2 before the end of the year. So, if we at MTB are to believe that rumor, would that mean that Blizzard DotA be out soon too? The trailer does say “soon-ish,” so it’s tough to say.
