Earlier today IGN picked up on Blizzard Community Manager Micah Whipple seemingly confirming the console version of Diablo III by tweeting that, “Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project.” The tweet seemingly confirmed the oft-rumored console version of the action-RPG.
Mosqueira had previously delivered the following tweet: “Are you a game designer? Do you love Diablo? What about Diablo on console? If so we’re looking for you…” So, game on then, right? Well, no, that’s not exactly the case.
Blizzard reacted to Whipple’s tweet by releasing an official statement through Game Informer explaining that nothing is solid yet. While it’s still entirely possible that the game will make its way over to the home consoles, formal work on the project apparently remains on hold for now.
Bashiok’s response on Twitter was intended as a confirmation that we’re actively exploring the possibility of developing a console version of Diablo III, as we’ve mentioned in the past. This is not a confirmation that Diablo III is coming to any console platform.
Our focus right now is on finishing the PC/Mac version of Diablo III and making sure it’s a worthwhile successor to the Diablo series.
It’s entirely possible that Blizzard has actually moved forward with porting the game, but they simply aren’t ready to announce it yet. The community manager’s statements would certainly seem to indicate that it has moved beyond the exploratory phase. There is no way of knowing that for certain at this point, though.
Would you guys be excited to see a console port? Or are you content to just have a PC version?
